Re: SO UH... this happened...
I love sables too. I didn't even think I'd get a tortie, honestly. I was going out on a whim, hoping the store might have something interesting, but figured even if they didn't I couldn't buy it. Thank goodness my SO said yes, or I'd be pining for her. :X

Sables are gorgeous! awww, I definitely wouldn't have been able to leave her either!
Btw, are you planning on breeding with her?

Re: SO UH... this happened...
Not really. I don't feel confident in my own knowledge of breeding and genetics, and I'm not really equipped to breed (space, more cages, etc.) but if things change, maybe.
Hammy20 is planning to breed the bigger one, who is probably a better specimen for breeding than my little one.

It was hard to pick, but I figured the whole "bigger is better" with breeding meant that she would be a better candidate for breeding. Since these ladies are from a breeder (Hammy20 met her and got Midnight from her) I think they'd make fine stock, despite coming from a pet store. They're not mill hamsters, like petsmart babes.
I can't wait to see the babies either, they'd be gorgeous!

Re: SO UH... this happened...
Yeah, I would imagine she would be the better option for breeding! Oh ok then, well midnight is also beautiful, so obviously a good breeder! Not all pet shop hamsters are bad like you say! It tends to be big chains that are the biggest problems! My poppy was from a local hobby breeder, but the remaining babies that didn't have homes were going to a little local pet shop

Re: SO UH... this happened...
I think my little one, Corretto, is likely the runt of the litter, she's much smaller than her sister. If so she probably won't make great breeding stock, unless she grows really well and fast. She may catch up. I'm weighing them both Friday and I'll see the discrepancy.
Their hamsters were all in very good conditions. Lots of variety too. It doesn't sound like they get the "rare" colours in often, but they told me flat out that for certain hamsters they have to make sure they're fed the right food and housed properly, so I assume those are all the breeder stock. I mean, I'd set those rules in place if I ever had babies go to a pet store. It's a pretty high end store, I never would have thought to check for hamsters there myself.
They were also twice the price I would normally pay for a hamster from petsmart. They had "regular" hamsters there too, who were 1/3 their price, lol. I mean part of me wants to argue it and say they're the same, but then again I know that the colouration is pretty uncommon, so...
