Syrian smell on heat?
What do Syrian's smell like on heat?
Annie yesterday had a very strange musty smell, that I have smelled on her before. She doesn't smell like it today, though. I always assumed she was just in need of a wash in the past, but I thought yesterday whether it was actually her in heat smell? She has never "stood" for me

Re: Syrian smell on heat?
Luna used to stink, really, really, really stink when she was on heat. It was a musky sort of smell. I wouldn't let her out when she was on heat as the smell clung to everything, skin, clothes... The sofa
Sounds like it's Annie being on heat to me, certainly as it only lasted for a night. Do you know how long it is between stinky phases?

Re: Syrian smell on heat?
Unfortunately I've never thought of it being her on heat smell until yesterday, so I've never made an effort to see if it is every four days

Re: Syrian smell on heat?
Laurel certainly smells more when on heat and recently scented me "properly" and it was sooo strong...took a lot of handwash to get rid of it!!
It sends my syrian boys crazy at times!
I am glad my clothes and furniture were spared.
I seem to think she is not always as strong when on heat so maybe it fluctuates a bit even from cycle to cycle...could that be the case?

Re: Syrian smell on heat?
Come to mention it, Annie also has a habit of what I assume is scent marking. She acts like a cat, rubbing her sides against things in her cage. That's usually an every day occurrence, though
I hope Annie doesn't decide to mark the furniture, it's the landlady's!

Re: Syrian smell on heat?
heat smells vary from hamster to hamster, some colours are stronger then others
my sh golden nancy has a very strong musky pungent smell, where lucy my lh satin cinnamon has a very sweet smell, you do get used to it after a while, and sometimes I dont even notice it (except nancy in her younger days, you couldn't miss it! it was like walking into a fragrance shop!)
they do have their scent glands they rub on things to mark territory, so they can find their way back to their nest and so other hamsters know the area belongs to another hamster. they dont need to be on heat to mark the area's, the scent gland on a girl is tiny, where on boys its more like a 5p coin on each hip lol!!
hope this helps hun x

Re: Syrian smell on heat?
Sometimes I feel like I know so much about hamsters, and sometimes I feel like I know nothing at all I assumed the rubbing thing was normal, but it is very bizarre to see Annie act basically like a cat!

Re: Syrian smell on heat?
I was surprised by Penny rubbing on everything like a cat when I first put her in her cage!! I haven't noticed any odors though! Maybe she is too young yet.

Zoroastrian only smells when I rubbed her hind quarters when she was on heat, very musky very strong scent. It amused me how she just froze XD
