Glipizide is a prescription only medication available from vets. I break the 5mg tablets in half, dissolve one half in a measured amount of water and administer the correct dose, based on the hamster's weight.

sorry to hear this Erin! but dont worry you will get it under controll! 2 out of 3 of my hammies are diabetic! one is happy on a controlled diet the other struggles a little but she is older! after some research and especially help from vectis hamstery i stick to high fibre, high protein low fat diet with absolutely no sugar! this is what i feed ( not saying this is perfect im still learning but it seems to be working for my hammies!)

base: burgess dwarf supahamster ( with corn picked out)

added: linseed ( amazing for their coats), porridge oats ( slow gluten release), millet (sprays) and pearl barely (only a little)

fibre: timothy hay (they love this!) vitacraft alfafla buscuits ( they will eat these but not the pellets in the mix :s)

protein: mealworms (live/crushed heads!) also working on introducing dog buscuits!)

veggies: always greens broccoli, spinach ect. no fruits! or sweetcorn/carrots/sweet peas too much sugar!

treats: peanuts and pumpkin seeds!

hope i am of some help! and like i said some of it may be wrong as i am learning atm aswell

Thanks loads TLTC! I will try Pippy on a similar diet and see how she gets on The last 2 days she has just been eating the green vegetables from her mix and pellets although she has left all of the pellets :/ I suppose she will eat them when she gets hungery.
I just nipped down to my brothers to borrow some hay from his rabbit and put it into Pippys cage, she had a little munch then decided it made a much better nest lol
