Re: All About Anya!
Anya has been making this little sounds like a fft or a human making a tsk or teeth sucking sound. She seems to do it when she's stressed, like when I have my hands in her cage. She was initially very tame and cuddly, but she's regressed from that (which is fine; she's settling in, and it's totally expected), and now she makes these sounds. I am trying to mostly leave her alone and give her space and time to settle in since it's only been a week since I got her. She seems perfectly healthy, and doesn't seem like she has a breathing problem at all, I just want to make sure these noises are normal. None of the other hamsters have made these sounds. She also refuses to drink from her water bottle but insists on a bowl. I don't have a problem with that, but the bottle is functioning fine; I've checked it several times. It's a nice, high-quality glass bottle, but she took it and kind of shook it and then I gave her a water bowl (and left the bottle in just in case) and she was happy. I used a little lizard water bowl I had (cleaned and sanitized, of course), and it was the perfect size, btw. This I chalk up to weird hamster behavior, but it was pretty funny. She's a baby still, and maybe she'd never had a water bottle before. I didn't notice what she had in her cage when I got her.

Re: All About Anya!
It does sound as though it's most likely just her being a bit stressed, I don't think the sounds are anything to worry about.
All of mine prefer to drink from bowls, it's probably a lot more pleasant than licking a metal ball to get water!

Re: All About Anya!
Hmm never had a hamster make noises like that so I cannot advise really, but if she is otherwise appearing well then I am sure there is nothing to worry about. She may not even be stressed, it could just be a noise she likes making! Even if she is a little more nervous right now, as you say, that is to be expected. She is only little and experiencing so much change. But, you are both doing so well! It’s early days yet.
As for the water bottle, it could be she has never had one before I guess, though I would be surprised as most people use water bottles in their hamster cages. My first hamster did not drink for days after I brought him home, despite the fact he was used to water bottles, and it really worried me. But, he eventually started. It could also be that she is drinking from it, but only when you are not there and you have not noticed the water level go down because baby hamsters do not drink very much.
A water bottle is has a number of advantages, but that does not mean you have to use one, or that bows are bad. A bowl can tip over and soak the shavings causing dampness and also making the water supply disappear and possibly giving your hamster a chill if she gets wet. Bowls can also be filled with shavings or bedding, especially when your hamster is digging, again soaking up the water supply and leaving her without one. However, a water bowl is obviously a better solution than Anya not drinking at all! And lots of people use them without problems.
I would suggest leaving the water bowl in for now. But, make sure it is the correct height for her and that water can come out by running your finger over the spout. And, try to persuade her to use it. You can smear something on the end of the spout, such as mashed banana or baby food and tempt her over to the water bottle by holding a treat next to the spout. If she has indeed never used a water bottle before, this might be a good way of teaching her how to use it.

Re: All About Anya!
The reptile bowls are pretty hard to tip over, plus the bowl is shallow, and I have her little water corner on some flat rocks, so there's no bedding directly underneath to get wet. Of course I will continue to monitor it. Maybe she just doesn't like this water bottle. It's at a perfect height for her. I might try a freestanding one, though, which is what I ended up putting in Beatrix's cage. It has a ceramic base it sits in, which I find is better for taller cages. It was very cute to see Anya drink from the little bowl, though. She seemed immediately more comfortable with that. Funny how all hamsters are so different!

Re: All About Anya!
In that case, again, I really wouldn't worry. If you'd like her to be able to drink from a water bottle, then you could try the method I suggested. But, it sounds as though she is quite happy with her bowl for now.
P.S I want a picture of her drinking from her bowl

Re: All About Anya!
If she's happy drinking from the bowl & you've got it in a spot where it works I'd just ditch the bottle, I actually think bowls are better, apart from being much more natural for them to drink from they are much easier to keep clean, I always get a bit concerned about the bacteria that can lurk in bottles & just find them a bit of a pain to clean.

Re: All About Anya!
I tried just giving Anya a new water bottle, and she drank from it just fine, but also kind of attacked it, trying to pull on the metal part, and so I gave her bowl back, and she drank and drank. I left the water bottle in there to make sure she doesn't run out of water, but she obviously prefers the bowl, which is fine.
I am a little worried about her, but I don't know if I'm just being a worried new hamster mum, or what, but I'm considering taking her to see a vet this week. She is still making the weird sound, and after she dug a burrow and tried for a long time to dig through the bottom of the tank, sort of standing on her head, she emerged and seemed like her breathing was a bit labored. I don't know if it was just exertion or what. I have had her for a week, and her behavior hasn't really changed or worsened, so maybe she's fine, but I might just call and ask the vet what they think anyway. I did wonder if she could be having a reaction to her bedding? I have aspen as a base layer at the bottom of the cage, and then a thick layer of the Kaytee paper bedding (can't remember the specific name) on top, and a tiny bit of Carefresh, because that's what she had in the first cage I brought her home in. None of my other hamsters have had any problems, but who knows. She's so young and seems so tiny to me, for a Syrian anyway.
Here is a cute picture of her from this evening. On my Instagram (linked below), I have video of her eating her blueberry.
ETA: It's hard to tell from the perspective of this photo, but to give you a sense of her size, she can fit in the hole at the bottom of her water bottle stand! I watched her crawl in and turn around and come back out. I was shocked.
