Any one else heard of this? ><
Hi,
I have kept approx 4 hamsters in the past and none of them have ever done this >< but my new little hammy is.. I have 3 large cages joinded togeather with savic pipeing (approx 1ft between cages) cage 1 is his play area/foodarea, 2 is his sand pit and hidey hole, 3 is where he sleeps and keeps his stockpile of munch lol. anyway over the last 3-4 days every morning i wake up to find my hamster has ALL of his woodchippings and sand into the pipe leading from cage 1 to 2. Is this normal? im a bit worried incase he blocks him self in / out I have even removed woodchippings incase hes tring to say theres too much in there but still no good any ideas? thanks

It is common for hamsters to do that. Unfortunately it's one of the downfalls of using a modular cage system. If you clear it out, most likely he'll put everything right back when you're not looking. If it were me, I'd ditch the modulars all together and go for a cage with a single level and lots of space for toys. Hope it works out

Re: Any one else heard of this? ><
oh yes, i had a Chinese who did this and drove me mad! After a long time of messing about with it, i changed her layout so that her bed area was below all the other levels. Try to somehow set it up so that the nest is in a module that is lower than the rest and he has to go down a tube to get to it. It needs to seem as if it's below ground to him. Try that and see if it makes a difference.
