Robo Housing/Pair advice
Hi everyone!
So my sister has recently bought 2 boys from P@H and I have some questions and concerns.
I've been reading about pairs falling out and becoming territorial. They were in the same tank so I'm presuming they are from the same litter. It would be a shame if they fell out. How common is this?
They are in a petstore plastic cage for now. She has bought the Barney cage for them 100x50, is this cage too big? I was reading that there should be no platforms? She's ordered 2 of everything and she is making some lollipop stick crafts from youtube.
What about diet? Are they prone to diabetes?
I'm just a little worried she's wasted a lot of money trying to get a nice setup and give them the best. Advice would be much appreciated

Re: Robo Housing/Pair advice
I think Robos are probably the easiest species to keep in pairs & males tend to be less territorial than females so there is a chance that they will be able to stay together.
Most pairs do tend to fall out though, as they mature their natural behaviour takes over & they want their own space so can get territorial or begin to fight whatever you try to do to help prevent it.
The Barney may be a bit big for them if they're used to a small cage, with no platforms or levels of any kind, two of everything & houses/hideouts with more than one exit & little open space in the cage they may take to it ok.
There's no way of knowing for sure.
Robos aren't prone to diabetes so no worries there.

Re: Robo Housing/Pair advice
Cypher gave you a lot of excellent advice. I would just be very vigilant for any potential signs of them not getting along. The signs may be as subtle as one not getting enough food and becoming very skinny whereas the other is thriving. This can be helped by scatter feeding so they have to forage for their foods. I always suggest having a second cage ready just in case your sister needs to separate them immediately. Best of luck to your sister and her two robo hams.

Re: Robo Housing/Pair advice
What cages would you recommend that would be perfect for 2 robos? We live in the UK and I've only had experience with Syrian and Dwarfs. I've never had a robo hamster so I would know what to pick if we do need a smaller cage.

Re: Robo Housing/Pair advice
Wouldn’t recommend downsizing if they did fall out you’d just want to separate - or it’s a bit of a waste of money. I’d personally use 80x50cm for a pair which is smaller than what I would for a single one although the Barney might really be fine. I kept 2 robos years ago in a 70x40 and they stayed together till the end but couldn’t advise going that small these days.
If they do figure out how to bar climb (which some robos do) I’d be concerned since as you shouldn’t be adding levels, it’s a big drop from the top. Would definitely stick to tank cages or lower ones in the future.

Re: Robo Housing/Pair advice
If you want a barred cage the Savic Mickey 2 is a good cage, basically the same basic cage as the Hamster Heaven without the tubes & penthouse but with narrower bar spacing which is safe for Robos & it's not too tall if they do climb the bars, it's a good size for a single ham but I think it would probably be suitable for a pair, not too big or too small. It does come with a mesh shelf which needs to be removed as that's not suitable for any ham but you don't need a shelf so not really a problem, on the downside it is quite an expensive cage.
Other than that you are really limited to tank style cages I think, I don't have much experience with them so not sure which would be the best.

Re: Robo Housing/Pair advice
I had the duna multy for one of my robos and it seemed a good size. She is now in the grosvenor because it is barred and it was soooo hot!

Re: Robo Housing/Pair advice
These are very old set ups but if it helps this is a 70x40cm roborovski setup which shows how much you can get in with 2 wheels (zoozone 1 which is same size as duna multy). Looking back at this it’s bigger than I remembered! Ignore the level - this was taken when they were both elderly with a slim chance of falling out imo.
If you want two 8 inch wheels then I’d go bigger, this is an 80x50cm ferplast Mary set up (for two winter whites)
