8inch wheel- syrian
Is an 8 in wheel harmful to a syrian? My s/o's little brother has a hamster, and his mother doesnt know how to take care of it, and thinks im ridiculous when i try to tell her things. I know an 8 inch is kind of small, but will it harm him? he originaly had a 4.5 inch wheel until i bought him a 6.5, and then upgraded him from a walmart cage to a tank with an 8 inch wheel. I cant get him anything bigger..

Re: 8inch wheel- syrian
I'm not sure about Syrians, but I know a dwarf should have one at least 6.5'', so I'm guessing a Syrian needs a bit more. The only thing that can be harmful to them is if they have to keep running, repeatedly, with an arched back, and the more he has to arch, the worse his back will get. Preferrably you should have a wheel large enough that the animal can run almost flat, and won't need to bend. I hope that helps

Re: 8inch wheel- syrian
The minimum size wheel for a Syrain hamster pup is 6.5 inches for an adult however it is 12 or 11 inchs as you don't want the hamster back to arch

Re: 8inch wheel- syrian
It really depends on the hamster! A lot of syrian hamsters are just fine with an 8 inch wheel, but big syrians will need a bigger wheel. I prefer to always go with the biggest wheel I can, but your situation is tricky. You need to check if the hamster's back is arching while he is running. An arched back can lead to many healthy problems and the hamster will be uncomfortable and maybe in pain while running.
I'm really glad to hear that you are taking such good care of a hamster that is not even yours! Good luck, hopefully they will start listening to you.
