Hamster sleeping in wheel?
My hamster of six months, Clyde, has been sleeping in his wheel for the past four days. I cleaned out the top layer of bedding in his tank and added some more. I didn't clean his toys, I wanted to keep his scent there. His nest was in a mug and it looked pretty dirty, but I didn't clean it out because he had a large hoard in there and I know he had worked hard on it, but it looked filthy. I put the mug (with the nest inside) back in its same place, but mixed up some of his other toys including the place of his wheel. Now he won't go back in his nest, or in any other of the hideouts I have for him. He's tried to nest a bit on his wheel by taking up some pieces of toilet paper and making small clusters of seeds, but I remove them so he can run safely. He does his business on his wheel often and it gets nasty. I'm not sure what to do about this wheel-nesting thing. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Re: Hamster sleeping in wheel?
He might feel unhappy at you changing his things in his cage, hamsters can be funny like that.
Put the cage back to the way it was, it's pretty normal for a hammie to sleep in his wheel. With the peeing on the wheel, he could be marking his territory because of the changes.
Whatever you do, don't take the wheel out, you might just need to wipe the pee of a couple of times a day.

Re: Hamster sleeping in wheel?
Clean the nest, if you haven't already. My syrian will abandon a nest once it gets too dirty (usually if I get busy at work and don't have time to spot clean properly for a few days) and will usually re-make it after a good cleaning.

Re: Hamster sleeping in wheel?
I'd clean his old nest mug out, keep just a little bit of the nesting material & food hoard, or some fresh food to put in there & he may go back to it.
Usually if they sleep in the wheel they'll remove the bedding when they want to have a run, if he's peeing in it obviously you will need to give it a wipe down but don't completely clean it every day until he's had a chance to settle back down again as that could just make things worse.
It may just take him a while to settle back down into nesting in a better place but I wouldn't worry too much!
