Using older Males
Hi Everyone
As you know I have Tochi my 13 month old male LH red eyed ivory. I know it says in the Lopaedia you can use hamsters up to the age of 14 months to breed. I wanted to know if anyone has used older males and has successful breeding with them? I am thinking maybe of using Tochi.

For my first litter, souffle and Pophammy very kindly lent us their "mature gentleman", Paws - he was 18 moths old when he fathered a litter of eleven on his first ...er.. attempt

It should not be a problem. They can father litters till over two and Pawsy is certainly still 'interested'. Start giving him things like broccolli and beansprouts which improve fertility.

My Smurf was a first time father aged 22 months recently, and his grandfather Zig was a dad for the last time at the grand old age of 32 months

I generally try to use younger males but I have a very pretty litter in the nest now fathered by an old boy who was 2 in February. Towy Vale recently used a male who was almost 3 to father a litter. He died of old age several weeks later with a satisfied smile on his face.

brilliant! there's hope for Harvey yet then! i've got Oscar in back-up if he fires blanks. I'd really like my litters to have two different fathers though.

Hi ya yay thanks. We haven't used Tochi at all before as we weren't going to do any breeding until we decided to start again this year. Its nice to know older males can still make daddys hehe.
Hi Bunsey fingers crossed for your little man.

Was that the Marty descendant Sue? I emailed Pete about my smoke pearl girl a couple of days ago and he said that he had kept a sable and sable roan from the litter - which Ithink is great!
