I've just been made redundant
Hello everyone, I just got the news that I have been made redundant. The investors want to focus on the German language projects and therefore the foreign language projects (like mine and my Brazilian colleague's project) have been given the chop.
The most annoying thing is that they have given me notice to leave exactly 26 days before my one year. That means that I am 26 days short of receiving any kind of severance, or income incapacity benefit/ jobseekers. The company knows this but are still unsure if they want to keep me for those extra 26 days.
I don't know how some people can be so heartless. My Brazilian colleague and I moved here specifically for this job. As she is now unemployed her working Visa is now invalid. Even if she finds another job here, she has to fly home, get another visa from the German embassy in Rio and then fly back. And I need 26 days to get jobseekers, but they won't budge.
I now need to decide if I want to plough my energy into finding a job here in Hamburg or going back to my beloved homeland of Bristol. I want to go back to Bristol, but all of my so called friends and family keep saying that it would be better if I stayed and they won't let me just do what I want without telling me that they think I am an idiot.
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you all about my redundancy, and hopefully fish for a bit of sympathy
Alice

Re: I've just been made redundant
That's a real pity. I hope you can come to some decision and things work out. I'd try really hard to get some sort of job to tide you over for now if you are happy in Germany otherwise come home and start again. Good luck

Re: I've just been made redundant
Being made redundant is horrible my dads an electrician and over the years I have seen him be made redundant loads
And we're I work gets mystery shoppers and if we are the one doing it and it's bad as far as I am aware we get the sack
And it's hardly fair that they wouldn't keep you on until you are eliable for job seekers as how do they expect you to survive
I would keep on at them about it but if al else fails I would go back home but I am a real mummy's girl

Never an easy situation to find yourself in Alice. Do what ever you feel will make you happy. If you are enjoying living in Germany then look for something there and if not consider going home. Lots of luck.

Re: I've just been made redundant
oh hun im sorry to hear about this! try and be strong, have a think on it, you have 26 days, look for a job, but when getting to 6 days left, sit, look at the situation, are you able to come back where will you be, what will happen with renting/living/germany.
I had to do something similar coming back from oxford, mine was only 3 hours drive away, not a different country, My landlord who had a falling appart hazard of a house said we had one month to leave, and we left one month after to the day, he had builders in, no hot water, no cooking equipment, all our plates and things in the kitchen had all just been thrown into black bin backs and dumped in a room by the builders. the tennants had been smoking illegal stuff, the smell of it was making me sick and headachy, and couldnt have been any good for fred and mishka.
hun I really really wish you all the best, I hope you get a new job and can stay out there if thats what you want, but I know that I for one would welcome you back, and hope to meet you at some point at a show

Re: I've just been made redundant
Oh no, so sorry to hear this. Have you considered contracting or temping? I am not sure if it is the same in Germany where you can register with an agency, work a week and get paid the next week? Then you would not have to wait a full month for your pay. I have been contracting for a good few years and there is always work in London (people with language skills are always sought after if you speak German too). Hope all goes well!
