Toys/chews -to keep / to sanitize when a hamster dies
Hello - I hope this is in the right topic our hamster Ralph sadly passed away over a week ago and I feel ok now going through his toys and chews and working out what can and can't be kept. My question is as he died of old age can his toys just be sanitized for the next hamster to use? He had natural and plastic toys - were not sure how to sanitize wood! With water bottles can another hamster use them or do these need replacing? Also do I need to sanitize the stones that were in his cage (keeping nails trim)? As we were first time hamster owners were not too sure. Hopefully we can keep most his toys etc for the next hammie it always make me smile when you see how much stuff a hamster has. Most of Ralph's toys/food etc took over our hallway cupboard with just a tiny space for our shoes

most plastic toys can be well washed and used again so can water bottles clean the stones as well. i wouldnt use any used chews or wooden toys again. so sorry for your loss.

Re: Toys/chews -to keep / to sanitize when a hamster dies
Thanks minijeva. That's good to know we can reuse water bottles and plastic toys (its seems a waste to throw out when some of his toys and bottles are still in good condition). I had a feeling chew toys and wooden toys might need to be thrown out. Ralph once had mites and some toys were chucked out then.
I love looking at hamster stuff in general- buying some new chews and toys will be nice to welcome a new hamster in the not too distant future hopefully

Im so sorry for your loss. 🙁 Erinsanimals on YouTube had a video for sanitizing wooden/natural wood things. Then you could maybe keep some of the wooden stuff! Just search "erinsanimals wood" and it should come up!

Re: Toys/chews -to keep / to sanitize when a hamster dies
As your ham died of old age & not any illness then you can keep some wooden things, I wouldn't keep anything that may ever have been peed on but some things like bendy bridges, coconuts houses & that sort of thing should be ok, I've reused things like that with no problem, I usually put them in the freezer for a week or so & give them a good airing first & that seems to remove any old hamster scent, if I reuse wooden houses I generally give them a fresh coat of plastikote before reusing.

Thanks Mose15 for recommending Erinanimals - will check her video, and thanks cypher for suggesting putting toys in a freezer. It's worth a try
