Talking Zach and Rufus new cage

So I decided to do a bit of a switch around with all the cages today as I felt the tank I had for the gerbils wasn't big enough. Theo (chinese) Had a ZZ2 to herself so moved her back to the rody cavia, Totoro (robo) was in the rody cavia has been moved back to the mini duna although if I have enough money in 3 weeks time he will be in either a ZZ1 or imac bingo. So the gerbils now have the ZZ2.

So the gerbils are happy with all the extra space and are happily running around exploring, But there is one unhappy chap totoro so I will have to spoil him with new toys and cage at the end of this month to make up for it. Here he is sulking in his sand bath

The gerbils are going to love the ZZ2 but I agree with you about getting little Totoro a ZZ1 or something that will give him the same feeling of more leg room! He should be fine in the Duna though. Sometimes when needs must and all that! x

Oh i feel bad having him in the mini duna this was just a cage i used when i do the clean outs but it will only be for 3 weeks so he should be fine even if he is throwing a tantrum atm lol. The tank is just very heavy and awkward to move around so trying to get rid of it

Can`t say I blame you! Glass tanks are a pain.

So I posted about the new cage in the gerbil forum and get told I should not keep them in a plastic cage at all due to there destructive chewing behaviour :/ well my 2 have not chewed the cage at all

I wouldn`t take much notice. If I kept gerbils again I would happily use a ZZ2 or a tank of similar size. Some forum members can be a little set in their minds when it comes to political correctness and rather than look at the bigger picture, it`s the closed ideals of a few.

Nothing wrong with your cage.

I can understand their concern, tbh id never keep gerbils in zoozones given my hamsters chew out of them and aesthetically having bedding well above the blue base would do my head in but then I have managed to keep my own gerbils in a bin cage and they made zero effort to chew that! Nobody on said forum said anything about my plastic bin cage btw so it seems a bit odd. That said I bought a tank for them as soon as I found one cheap enough lol!

All my hamster are in similar style cages to the zoozone and not had any chewing at all so I think there are a few that will chew there way out but this does not apply to all gerbils/hamsters so there for you can't really tell someone that because its a gerbil it will defiantly chew the cage as my 2 have not.
The reason I moved them from the glass tank to the zoozone is because a) the zoozone is much lighter easier to move around where as the glass tank is heavy and awkward b) it much bigger plenty of room for 2 and c) I have not been able to find any larger tanks for a good price, they are expensive.
If I lived in a bigger place and had the room I would consider the ikea detolf but as i have limited space and need to be able to move the cages myself the ZZ2 was the best choice for me
As for having the bedding coming over the base i don't find this an issue as i just take the grill off the top and use a dust pan to scoop out the dirty bedding then top it up with fresh bedding I rarely do a full clean out.

I meant I find it funny that nobody queried my plastic bin cage with ridges they could chew but somebody instantly says something for a zz2 thats just odd. I dont think its wrong to express concern as gerbils do chew out of plastic but I also didnt like the way they did it, these are the same people that use plastic wheels and bottles (and plastic base gerbilariums!) which are far easier to chew and more likely to cause ingestion issues than a cage so its illogical that argument IMHO.

I'd love a detolf but I couldnt get one without getting them for the others and I certainly dont have room for like 10 of the things!

I know what you mean I have seen lots of people using the plastic base gerbilariums which I think are worse and I personally don't like them when I first got the gerbils this is what they were in and with a plastic wheel and tube which I took straight out. But I think with lots of space, cardboard and wooden toys they don't pay any attention to the cage as they have plenty in there to keep them occupied always chucking empty food boxes and stuff in there they love it. Hahaha 10 detolfs wow yeah think you would need a mansion for that lol
