Default Trip to the Emergency Vet

Wynonna, the foster we have started to have very fluid (and bloody) diarrhea and was vomiting a lot. She was just so sad and depressed looking, which was uncharacteristic of her as she is such a spunky little Boston terrier puppy.

So we took her to the emergency vet clinic and had a Parvo "snap" test done. Thankfully, the test came back negative. They then took her to the back to get a stool sample, but she had another bout of severely fluid diarrhea so they couldn't take one. They did, however, discover that she was dehydrated, so they injected some fluids into her back to compensate for that. They really couldn't find a clear diagnosis, so they thought it might have been something she ate.

The vet told us that puppies have very sensitive stomachs, more so than adult dogs. So, they sometimes get bad diarrhea when they eat something that would normally only mildly upset an adult dog's stomach. They recommended keeping her for 28 to 48 hours for observation, but that would've cost around $800. Not having that kind of money to spend, we opted for the much less expensive out patient treatment course, (which was around a couple hundred dollars) and if, in the morning, she was worse, we would take her to the regular vet clinic we use for our fosters.

They sent us home with some anti-diarrhea, anti-nausea, and anti-vomiting medicine (its a liquid medicine that is to be fed by oral syringe) as well as a couple of cans of very bland dog food. We have to let her stomach settle so we can't feed her until the morning. She can have a little bit of water, but not much. She needs to essentially let her stomach "reset", as the vet put it.

Fingers crossed that she makes it through this illness, whatever it is.

Well, morning came and she appears to be in better spirits. She took her medicine, rather reluctantly like any baby would, and some of the bland diet with a good drink or two of water afterwords. She has successfully kept everything down so far.

She is now rolling around on the floor with another Boston terrier puppy we are watching for a friend, who is out of town. She has her spark back. I don't know what she had that made her tummy so upset, but I think its going away.

She just pooped and her stools look more like dog poop should look, not the stuff that came out last night. Then it was the exact viscosity and color of chocolate milk with a hint of a red tinge to it. Now it just looks like soft serve chocolate ice cream.

Sorry if I grossed you out with all this talk about doggy poop, I am just elated that she isn't squirting out liquid diarrhea anymore.
