They are so different than hamsters. I can't believe they are at all related. I think more like mini squirrels now. They both have the almond shaped eyes. So that pesky squirrel destroying my bird feeders out back? Now I feel endeared to the rotten thing because he looks like the big brother to my gerbils! LOL

Okay, so I couldn't stand them being in a 20 gallon. And the 28 gallon is less length than the 20 gallon and I could make up for it with the depth of bedding for burrowing but I'm still trying to tame them and don't want to dig and dig trying to get them out for their play pen and handling, etc. I'm still on the look out for a big 40 or bigger gallon tank at affordable prices. So, now they are in a 110 qt storage bin. I also made a play pen out of that thick poster/sign board which is duct taped and velcroed so it can be easily collapsed and stored. I show all of that in the little Bin Cage Tour I made to put on my hamster/gerbil blog but thought I'd post it here too.

Oh- also I said they need 7 inches of substrate but I meant to say it like "they need at least" but that number was random and popped into my head - I wasn't trying to make it some type of specific rule. I just meant they need a LOT of it to burrow in. Oh well. LOL

Your gerbilarium looks great, whats the metal for inside the tank for? and you might want to rethink the lid as gerbils are escape artists, Also you have no need to buy a metal water bottle holder if you make a hole in the lid you can just poke the water bottle spout though I do this with my tanks and it works very well. Apart for that I think its good you are thinking ahead, are you rescuing your gerbils? because don't forget that pet shops ones often come from rodent farms
