"cruel" pet shop
When we went into this particular shop to get monty, he was in a tiny cage in the window, no protection from the sun and obviously little to no handling because he wasn't tame. We really felt like we were rescuing him more than anything. Unfortunately they've put another one in the window, who I think has been there for quite a while. Little guy had covered himself up with his tiny amount of bedding the best he could but I think it's terribly cruel there was also a budgie in a tiny cage next to the hamster with nothing to do, no shade etc.
My question is, first of all, how can people treat living creatures like this? I seriously almost cried at the sight of them. Secondly, I have contacted my local council on advice from the rspca and they have done absolutely nothing. What, if anything else can i do? I would rehome them all if i had the room and time, but that would encourage the pet shop to continue trading. These animals (even the ones inside) are obviously miserable so horrible

Re: "cruel" pet shop
have you considered going in and talking to the staff or managers at the store? Tell them they should have shelter from the sun. See how they react perhaps? They may be willing to change it if they know how customers feel about the set up.

Similar thing happened to me (terrible pet shop; hamsters all mixed together(even syrians and ww), smelly filthy bedding, few betta fish males in the same tank, birds in bar-flooring cages). I tryed to talk to staff, but they said they are the ones runing pet shop, not me, and they keep animals for over 20 years, so I can take all of my internet knowledge with myself, walk out and never return again. I thought about contacting some animal organisation or even police, but someone was faster then me; that shop closed within a week.

The woman who sold us monty seemed really happy that he was going to have a home, she'd been giving him little treats, knew he was a boy and how old he was etc. I haven't seen her since, which leads me to believe she was a volunteer. I'm worried that as I am in no way an expert on small animals they would basically just tell me to shove off as they did to you Wish the council had taken me seriously, my boyfriend has lived in the area much longer and knew it as a "dodgy" pet shop. Sigh.

Re: "cruel" pet shop
Call them again (council i mean) also maybe look into calling the local news paper they may be interested in the story and poke around even if they dont run the story it may course the shop owner to move the display.
Also try talking to the shopkeep it may be that they just haven't thought about the effect it is having on the poor things some people are so busy living there life's they dont see stuff like this till its pointed out to them.

Re: "cruel" pet shop
Aside from complaining there isn't much you can do. My local pet shop had a meerkat for sale kept in a hamster cage and a tiny one at that!! Was devastating, i rung,wrote and did just about everything i could and nothing was ever done. I know its extremely upsetting and want to take them all home, but all this means is they replace them. Me personally do not give the pet shop my business,the more people that do this the more likely they are to change. I also cross over the road and walk fast. As looking at the poor animals just makes me very sad!!

Re: "cruel" pet shop
This sounds awful. Most pet stores simply don't seem to keep animals quite right most hams and gerbils etc have little to no handling. The ones kept at pets at home tend to be untamed and skittish. It makes me so sad they are just kept more like livestock than future loved pets :{

Re: "cruel" pet shop
I was so lucky to find a wonderful pet shop that handled every animal for ten minutes or more a day. They were so tame! :C It's a shame such shops cease to exist anymore.

Re: "cruel" pet shop
All these bad shops making some look like heaven or what? When I go by the pet shop I go in then look around and ask all sorts of ?s pretending to be going to buy things from them. Then if I see dirty cage etc I just say " eew your cages are dirty and looks like you don't care for your animal so I won't be buying from you anything"
They seems to think I'm mad but who cares! I hate pet shops nowadays. It really gives me headache to go in poor little helpless animals.
