Default Mouse Like Hamsters

I thought I would share this because the wee mites are seriously cute!

I don't know of *anyone* other than Kat and I that have had much success in breeding this species in this country, the places that do sell them have to import them.

They are a really interesting species, nothing like hamsters at all, definately more like mice, less handleable though. The adults have the ability to move scarily fast! Im pretty sure they might even be able to fly or at least move from one end of the shed to the other in one easy leap!

Ours are a funny bunch, the original male died after producing one litter and that left us with the original two females and we reintroduced their daughter now that she had grown up and then that trio was kept together for about 6 months and wahay, suddenly one of them (the original two females) has grown testicles and there is a litter in the nest!

The problem with the Mouse Like Hamsters (like several of my fancy mice actually..) is that the second the babies open their eyes, they are a threat to the adults! They take up cage space and eat the food (even though they arent short on space or food!) but they start culling the babies!

--------

There are currently two litters, the older litter was of three babies which is normal to large.... then we hada second litter of 7 which is shocking! Its like a Syrian having 30 babies really!

I decided this time to remove the older litter when one of them dissapeared, their eyes werent open yet but they were fully furred and starting to move about (though parents never let them leave nest). I got the two older pups outta there and in a day or so i'll remove the next 6 that are remaining before they all get eaten, though a litter that size im sure some will survive anyway.

I *think* the two I pulled out are both female (not surprising, they have yet to produce a male!) and are living in a 'Really Usefull Box' that we use for growing on tiny babies in small groups. They have a bowl of Lactol milk replacer with a vitamin mix mixed in.

After 24 hours one baby opened its eyes and good god is it noisey! It runs around yelling at everything saying 'peep! peep peeeeep peep peep! It is so unbearably cute!!

Ooh, i nearly forgot to say, these two babies are also living in with a young female Stone Fox fancy mouse, her parents have a habit of culling babies once their eyes open at they start running around too and i dont have a 'running on group' of females at the moment. The Mouse Likes adore her and keep trying to flip her over and suckle and she thinks its great fun and lets them try and suckle and she licks them and grooms them (she obviously isnt that great at it yet! Look how scruffy they are LOL)

Here is the mouse that is in there:

Any the moment you are waiting for... ;D

Their tub until they are older...

They all sleep together in the nest to keep warm (another reason for the bigger mouse baby) and they are also on a heatmat that we use for the snakes usually.

Congratulations on the new additions - I've seen these chaps on the internet, before, but have never known anyone having anything to do with them.

I've never owned mice, full-stop; would be interested in hearing more
