Hamster Biting Bars
Hello!
So my syrian is 1 year and 9 months old and he has always been a really calm hamster. I let him out of his cage about an hour after he wakes up every single night and I've let him free roam a few times aswell.
However, lately its been pretty difficult to not notice that he's been climbing to the the very top of his cage then biting and shaking the bars aggressively. He has never done this before and he's been doing it constantly every night for the past week now so I'm getting a bit worried. His cage is a good size and has two sections to it. The bottom section is a large bin cage which have got plenty of toys and wooden chews inside and then the top half is a wire cage which has his large wheel in that is made for large rodents. He goes on this all the time and he absolutely loves it but lately he has been going crazy biting the bars and I am worried as this is really unusual.
If anyone could help me out that would be great. Thanks guys!!

Hey I'm a hamster newbie but I've watched crazy amounts of videos on them and anytime I've heard of that it's usually "cage rage" sometimes they do outgrow their cage it's a normal problem for all animals you should do read up on it! Hope this helps, Mel.

Re: Hamster Biting Bars
I don't think this sounds like cage rage due to him outgrowing the cage, as at 1 year and 9 months old he would already have been fully grown for some time.
How is he when he's free-roaming? Is his behaviour normal then? It might be an idea to check anything that you have changed in the cage that could possibly have triggered this. It might even be something external to the cage (those high-pitched noises that are inaudible to us but picked up by small animals) such as plug-in pest controllers or air fresheners, or perhaps a flashing light that's bothering him. Could you move the cage to another room to see if that makes a difference? It's also worth checking his general health, making sure he's not in any kind of pain or discomfort and that his teeth are not bothering him.
I do hope you are able to find a solution. It's harrowing to watch our pets when they're not happy.
