maybe you could ask the staff at the pet shop for some contact numbers for the breeders they get their pets from. You could explain that you want to go to them direct im sure they'll understand and help you out.

Do you think they would? They were cagey about telling me where they get particular catfish from. I will go tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
I need to get a move on I told my daughter I phoned Santa to add a hamster to her list because she really REALLY wants one and he said he'll see what he can do...

Well that's a bit dodgy :S I work in a pet shop and all of us there always answer customer questions and make sure that our customers are happy. We would always help someone out! But every shop is different, I guess.

It's reassuring to know that there are pet shops out there who actually care about the animals.
I've still not decided on a cage yet. That would be a start!

This is one of the biggest ones I could find and it has tube extensions too so you can add compartments which they really like Ferplast Duna Fun Small Animal Cage, Large: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies its a bit pricey though.

Oo this ones cool you can fill the bottom with bedding and watch them burrow and the levels aren't made of wire KARAT 80 - Small Pet
It's also a nice size; the dimensions are 78.5 x 45.5 x h 52.5 cm

Thanks I need to update the picture in my sig really... A lot of the hams shown in it have passed and we have quite a few others who aren't on it now (and thats not even considering the mice...)

I'd never heard of hams being neutered, I can't really imagine a need for it? I know male mice and rats are neutered sometimes though

I'd suggest going for a cage with a bigger footprint than the pico XL, the shelves may look fun but hams generally prefer floor space over height. The favola looks great but is at the smaller end of cages most on the forum use so if you're the type to want the biggest bestest cage then you may find yourself wanting bigger sooner or later (I use cages of a similar size long term but not very often). The duna multy is good if you like tank style cages I adore Alexanders... They're huge and have loads of space and really small bars so they're brilliant for anything that isn't either a bar chewer or terrified of big cages. We use them for dwarf hamsters a lot, right now our five chinese have one each

Out of your list, I would go for the Alexander if you have room for it. If you don't, the Duna Multy would be an excellent cage for a dwarf hamster. I've never had a dwarf hamster (have a syrian) but from what I've seen and heard of them they appreciate the space just as much, if not more, than a Syrian because they are so active. On the other hand, the Alexander cage is quite high so would need lots of things to break falls. I think if I had the space I would go for the Maxi Duna Multy - just that bit longer and higher.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ferplast-Max...rds=duna+multy

Or there's my cage (Savic Mickey 2XL 80cm x 50cm) which has 7mm bar spacing and is suitable for dwarfs - it's the same size as the Hamster heaven but with smaller bar spacing - it has a really good big front opening door. It comes with a wire shelf which needs removing (it's actually a mouse cage), plus some play tubes and a sputnik. Only thing is they've put the price up at the moment. It's normally about £65 and is on at about £86 at the moment which is way too high - the price will probably come down again after Christmas.

I am favouring the Alexander, I will need to make a choice soon!
Aww yeah update it so we can see! I don't know why, and this will sound so weird- I'm petrified of mice and rats! No thankyou!

I like that. I am definitely going to go for that kind of style.
I am viewing my new place on Friday- I know, 2 weeks before Christmas, I didn't expect it, I'm in shock. I'll see how big it is. Hopefull my tanks fit, I'm actually stressing out about moving them.
I've also decided just because they are bigger, they might be easier for my daughter to handle, I am going to get us a Syrian each.
I went to the pet store chain, I saw 2 pure white dwarf Russians, I asked to reserve them but was denied, I also asked for breeder info and again denied. I saw 2 HUGE pure white Syrians in the adoption centre which aren't available until next week so will see what happens with this flat and moving and due to how big they were (my Syrians didn't get this big!) I think my daughter would find it easier to handle them
