Default Hello all! New here with concern

Hi everyone.

We are new here. We have two dwarf hamsters. Hammy is a Russian Winter White and is very friendly and happy and healthy.

Truman is a Cambelli (we think). Anyway, the concern is with Truman. He is about 1.5-2 yrs old. We got him at a pet store and they said that he was about 4-7 mths at that time (last Christmas). He seems to be happy and somewhat healthy. When we first got him, he ran in his wheel day and night. He ran and ran. We were going to change his name to Forest he ran so much. But then he started to not run as much. Didn't think too much of it, he still ran a lot at night. Well, then about 4-5 mths ago, we noticed he started scratching. We studied and read everything and we know that hamsters groom incessantly. He doesn't have any hair loss, and his skin is dark pink..not red really, just very pink. We have checked and I don't see any mites or fleas. There are no other animals in the house. I use carefresh bedding. His eyes are slanted but clean and clear. His fur has always been more "unkempt" looking then Hammy's. But it's not clumpy. We are just concerned about the scratching. He does scratch an awful lot. And we want to make sure it's either "normal" or cause for concern before we shell out the $84 to take him to the vets.

thanks so much!
Kim <--mom to Caroline (9) Truman's owner and Matthew (4) Hammy's owner.

Welcome to HC.

As said, it's most likely fine. Hamster's love to groom/scratch, more so Russians I've noticed.
