I wonder if a bottom layer of wood chips would absorb the smell then the regular substrate on top of it. I'm suggesting that because woodchips worked better than paperbased to absorb the pee smell when i had a diabetic dwarf.
The smell is probably in the sealant rather than the glass.
Do you think that your hamster is bothered by it?

I dont think he's even noticed if I'm honest. I'm gonna try the wood chips the next time I do a big clean, see if it helps at all. Like I said it's not awful, it's just definitely there. It's almost like by putting the bedding in a new smell was created because it's not the exact same as before 😂
