How big should a Hamster wheel be???
Hello all, Im new to the boards here. We have had our Hamster Alvin for about 3 weeks now. His wheel was fine when we bought the cage but now hes getting bigger I think he could do with a bigger one (his current one is just under 6inches). Whats the best size for a wheel? I was also considering getting a flying saucer, are they any good? Thanx xxxx

Re: How big should a Hamster wheel be???
For an average to large syrian the wheels supplied with cages are way too small. A syrian needs an 8inch diameter. Good wheels are the Wodent wheel junior, the Savic Jumbo Rolly rat wheel (from P&H) or the large comfort wheel all at 8in or over. We don't find they are that fond of the flying saucers. Some hamsters don't know how to work them but he may like it. I think they are maybe better for dwarfs though. A small syrian can get away with a Medium silent spinner but the weight tends to make them break the spindle. If a had a choice I would go for the wodent wheel which is quite quiet and roomy. I think there is a review of the cambridge in the review section so you can check if one will fit in your cage.

For a syrian I recommend an 8" wheel. Personally I LOVE wodent wheels and would recommend them thoroughly, but jumbo rollys (available from pets at home) and comfort wheels are great also.

Re: How big should a Hamster wheel be???
As far as I know they are only available online. The cheapest I've found is at www.equinecaninefeline.com
http://www.equinecaninefeline.com/catal ... anels.html
You want the junior one, the others are massive.
It is £8.99 and postage is £2, but I can assure you that it is definately worth it! (you could also buy other stuff whilst you're there to get the most out of your money )

Re: How big should a Hamster wheel be???
this depends on speiceis most of the wheels suppleid with most cages are fine for dwarfs
thougth noise can be an issue
however with syrians id go with wodent wheels as above exept if i had an extermly long haired male then id go with a 12 inch silent spiiner and i have it on good advice from someone who used to show mice that the smaller ones are fine for lh mice so i think the 12.5s fine for lh males thougth there are cage issues

Re: How big should a Hamster wheel be???
I emailed that Lamp Post one about colours today!! Will let you know if they respond if you like?
BTW would just like to add, they are such cool wheels.
Edited- they have emailed back to say they have red, blue, green and yellow in stock and you can choose out of those.
Speedy response I have to say!!

Lamp Post are pretty good. I usually just put in the comments field what colour I want and if they don't have it in stock, they contact you. Saying that, Equine Canine Feline are very good too.
