some people
my dad just came back from the car boot with a cage about 30 by 10 by 20 cms and told me that he bought it for his Chinese ham if they fight while together but even worse i went ballistic at him for even suggesting this.
but even worse the previous owner had four campbells in this cage with only one wheel and a house
thank god he bought it at least it will only be used in emergencies for a rescue if my main rescue cage is in use or as a travel cage

its lovely of your dad to think of your hamsters!
but I do see your point, so many of the cages available are tiny

Try not to blame your dad so much matty, its obvious he didn't understand and was only thinking of the hamsters. People have different views on cage sizes and always will.

That was really nice of your dad - mine would never do anything like that. His intentions were good, don't take it out on him.

Not that I think it's right, but some people just don't know any better.
I've learnt a lot since being here, but when people first get an animal, chances are they go on what the petshop and the books they buy say (which is normally a load of do-do). Probably al ot of people would assume that if these cages are available, then they must be suitable.
It's the manufacturers that are in the wrong for producing them.

If you're in P@H, as a potential customer, I can guarantee you'll be looking, primarily, at the animal - once you've agreed to purchase that, then you'll pretty much take whatever's on the shelf, cage-wise. Or whatever the shop assistant might have available, and is able to recommend - remembering that this is a sales environment.
I think this would apply to the vast majority of entries to pet ownership.
Certainly, some people are more willing to research, and take a more considered approach - and many of us here fall in that band - but so many don't.

my first visit to p@h involved my buying 2 robos and the cage that the assistant suggeted! i didn't even know what robos were, so i wasn't gonna say oh such and such cage isn't suitable. luckily the assistant was good and i got a rody. i think they recommend rodys to all robo buyers due to the lack of bars. Second time around i bought bunsey, my first syrian, still having no clue about cages and again got a rody. then later i saw it was cleary too small and bought a gabber. a lot of owners wouldn't have bothered,

Absolutely spot on.
Perhaps the RSPCA's time would be better served by taking on the manufacturers of small and inadequate cages, then there wouldn't be any for ignorant people to buy. It's not just cages marketed as hamster cages that are too small - it's the same for rabbits, piggies, rats etc.
