Re: Bald spot on hips
I understand your way of thinking by wanting to give your hamster the experience of mating but i don't think he'll miss what he doesn't know.
Syrians are solitary animals who in the wild interact to mate for the sole purpose to reproduce. When not in heat a female is likely to beat up a male approaching her so social interaction doesn't come into it.
I'm not a hamster but i'm going by what i've read about hamsters. I also believe that one year old is already past the prime for breeding.
Get your hamster a Whimzee instead.

Re: Bald spot on hips
Absolutely do not breed your hamster. Best case scenario is, you breed your ham, the female births a healthy litter who all having genetic defaults that cannot be seen. Worst case scenario is your ham and the female fight and fatally injure each other.
As said previously you have no idea what his genetics consist of. Hamster breeders work for years to develop the best genetic lines possible, and you do not want to put a pet-shop hamster into that mix.
But also you seem like a newbie owner to me? Unless you're serious about getting into breeding I don't even know why you would be considering it. He's a hamster, not a human. Also Asexuals are a thing, sex and procreation is not the be-all and end-all of a fulfilling life.
Please don't breed him. Please.

Re: Bald spot on hips
Thanks for all the advice, guys. Yeah, I think my problem is I anthropomorphise him too much. The chances of finding him a mate were pretty low anyway but I was wondering about the possibilities.

Now I noticed the spot on his right hip has mostly disappeared and the one of his left has gotten bigger. Should I be concerned about this? He does not seem te be in any pain or discomfort, he is very energetic and active as usual. But I have noticed he does not use the wheel as much as he used to. He has a 20" trixie wheel.

hi! Those are just scent glands and that is perfectly normal! also the wheel is probs to small, for your syrian i'll suggest to upgrade to a 10 inch wheel or larger!
