Re: Respiratory problem help
Hi,
My hamster Muffy (female, just under 2 years old) has recently come down with similar, if not the same, symptoms as you have described! I've taken her to the vets and been given some antibiotics and 'fibre-plus' food to help recovery.
My vet explained with Syrians it could be a different list of health issues. - Viral infection to their lungs
- Tumor (Is your hamster swollen in any way? One side or both?)
- Cyst (Swollen?)
- Ovarian cyst (Female hammys)
- Old age
It depends on their age about what the causes could be and what their bodies are trying to recover from. Hamster's don't show they are ill until they are severely ill, as they are a prey species.
Unfortunately Muffy is seeming to take a turn towards the end of her days. The antibiotics have reduced swelling to one side of her stomach, but is still reclusive to her nest.
Try to keep an eye on how much your hamster is drinking also. If they have a blockage in their nasal passage, they will breathe through their mouths and make drinking anything a second priority. Try to, at least twice a day, get a small sterilised syringe and give them water so their hydration levels are more stable. This could help your hammy get strength to survive through their illness.
If your hammy also becomes a recluse and you're not seeing them as much or a change in noises/discharge produced/eating habits, i'd say definitely worth another vets trip.
Hope this helped, and hope your hammy feels better soon.

Re: Respiratory problem help
How strange i've literally just come back from the vets with my Russian hamster who has exactly the same symptoms! It's strange how it stops when they sleep isn't it. 'Wet' noise when breathing
The vet says he can hear some fluid on Pips lungs and has given antibiotics and told us to go back in a few days if nothing improves.
I hope Wonder has a speedy recovery.

So sorry to hear your hammy is sick with the same symptoms
Apparently it's quite common. Fingers crossed these antibiotics work for the both of them!

Sorry I had missed this comment before now.
Thanks so much for you informative response and I'm so sorry to hear about your poor Muffy
Other than the breathing difficulty, Wonder is full of beans, eating, drinking, pooing and weeing like normal.
No obvious signs of swelling.
She's running on her wheel like greased lightning and then getting puffed. Not sure if taking her wheel away for now would help or hinder her wellbeing

Re: Respiratory problem help
I hope Wonder is feeling better recently, the fact she's moving around and eating, pooing etc seems like it could just be abit of a chest infection that's getting her down? I'd suggest a small vets trip if possible, some antibiotics should be able to clear it up
For the wheel use - maybe just restrict the hours she has access to it, so a couple of hours a day just so she doesn't get injured maybe?
Unfortunately Muffy had to be allowed to go to sleep on the 1st October as her condition only deteriorated over time But she was happy and healthy in her long life, so passing on knowledge and helping more people in her memory is a pleasure!
