Default Baytril

Hello everyone,

It has been a while since I have posted on these forums.

Last time I posted here we had 6 hams and now we are down to 3 having lost our winter whites, Autumn (12 months), Lister (18 months) and Dale (18 months)

Now we are left with Robbie the Robo, Lisa the Syrian and Francesca the Winter White and they are all getting quite old themselves.

And just this week Fran has developed a nasty looking rash on her front legs - baytril prescribed by vets, and Lisa has become very subdued and lethargic - baytril prescribed by vets - cost £36-37 total.

I must have spent a £100-200 on baytril from the vets in the last 6-12 months and I am getting a bit fed up of having to spend £18 per visit for 5-10 mls each time.

Now, Fran was given baytril for a seperate condition a few months ago and it worked really well for her and Lisa seems to have improved since she started on it a couple of days ago but I find it frustrating that I need to keep going to the vets every single time.

Its a real shame you can't get it without prescription as it would make it much cheaper for us, and when they are quite old like ours, there isn't really anything else they can give them other than baytril anyway.

I am sorry to hear of your losses and run of bad luck with illnesses.
The costs are not to bad if that includes a consultation. Bayrtil does keep for a bit in the fridge but the meds will forum the smaller amount of the vet costs usually about £4.
If the vet is a good one then I'd stick with them. Hope your hams are better soon and you have some better luck. Unfortunatly the older they get the more probelms we encounter.

is the £18 just for the baytril or is that including the consultation fee? At my vets the consultation is around £12 and the baytril is around £4

Well I wasn't sure about this but when I took my cat in for a check-up I asked really nicely if I could have a little bit more and they charged me £3.80.

Lisa seemed to respond well to the antibiotics initially but she rapidly deterioated earlier in the week and by Thursday morning it was clear that her time was up.

I called the vet to get her put to sleep ASAP as she was clearly suffering and having some kind of seizure but she didn't even make it and passed out shortly after. To be honest I was quite glad that I didn't have to put her through getting in the car etc in the end.

The tragedy of it was she was shaking quite rapidly and I picked her up to have a look. She then went into quite a violent fit in my hands and jumped back into her cage. To be honest I think that picking her up led to a massive stroke which finished her off - very upsetting to see but I just wanted to say goodbye

aw, i'm sorry. it was probably a co-incidence about having the fit in your hands. I mean, if she was shaking anyway, she was probably about to have the fit. It's distressing to see, but probably better than she went like that rather than having to be PTS or linger on.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I think Bunsey is right and she would not have felt anything because she was already unconcious due to the fitting. I'm sure she felt you near and I hope her path was gentle.
Play well at the bride Fran
