Re: My hamster Alex is missing and I don't know what to do!
If you have some slightly rough cloth/material such as a dish cloth that is long enough to go down the vent use that secured under some books, and put some peanut butter near the top, Hams do love peanut butter and they can smell it quite easily, one other thing does your Ham react to his food bag being shook at all? this could encourage him back.
Good luck getting your little dude back.

So sorry to hear that. I think if he hasn't taken the food you lowered then he's no longer in that vent. He might have got into someone else's apartment or even got outside somewhere.
Did you try the bucket trap in the apartment in case he is still in the apartment somewhere?

Re: My hamster Alex is missing and I don't know what to do!
I tried the bucket trap but nothing... I keep feeling like this is my fault maybe if I had payed more attention then what I was giving him that he would not have left. He has only escaped one time but that was because I left his cage door open but he was easily found within an hour at most. He tried to escape 1 other time with his new set up but I had made sure to close off that escape. I guess he found another way to escape but I might have fallen asleep to while I was holding him but I am not sure I thought I had put him back in his home before I had fallen asleep but I just can't remember...

Re: My hamster Alex is missing and I don't know what to do!
You mustn't blame yourself - hamsters are great escape artists and will go for the nearest dark hole they find. He didn't leave you - he was just being a hamster and exploring. Even a very tame hamster who bonds with you can disappear down the nearest hole.
Some hamsters can even open cage doors with their teeth. Tubes can be an escape route. This has happened to many many people before. I sometimes realise I've left the cage door open while sorting the water bottle. Luckily our hamster doesn't notice lol - he's usually asleep until about 11pm. But it could happen to any of us.
The waiting and wondering must be very hard. At some point I think it will be a case of a mental adjustment and accepting maybe he won't come back now, say goodbye and then try and move on. If he reappears it would be unexpected and a nice surprise.

maybe leave some flyers around your apartment building letting people know you're missing a hamster?

Well no sign of Alex still but on another note I think my other hamster Spud is getting old he sleeps a lot even in the night and he does not run much either and when he walks its not very fast...
