Default Oh no!! Help!!

Need some help

I have had to separate my Chinese brothers, Theo and Sky

Sky has always been one for chasing Theo around, but there has never been any blood drawn. Until tonight that is.

Theo was squealing like mad half an hour ago, I rushed over to see what all the fuss was about. There was blood all over the bedding, and Theo has been nipped on his left testicle, where there is a scab. He also has a few toes missing

I took him straight out of the cage and put him in a sterile one, that Sir D came to me in. It's small, but functional for him.

Theo is very special to me, have I done all I can for him? I want to make sure he's comfortable, but I'm scared the shock will kill him.

Missing Toes??

Im not sure if there is anything you can do appart from putting him in a quiet place and keeping him warm. Probs best to take him to the vets tomorrow too and have his toes looked at.

You have done the right thing in separating. Don't panic now. You need to keep him warm and very quiet to get over the shock. Maybe cover the cage up and then take him to another room so he cannot smell the other ham. If you can bathe the wounds once only in cooled boiled water then leave them heal naturally. It can take several weeks. If his injuries look very bad you will likely get a vet appointment tomorrow morning as most vets open 9-11ish and P@H surgeries are open all day. Say it is an emergency. He may get antibiotics and maybe some anti-inflammatories. Let him rest now and offer some food and water, but warmth and quiet are the main thing. With Chinese the attack usually comes very suddenly like that. I hope he gets well soon. I am sure he will. He will manage fine even if he lacks some toes as long as they do not get infected which is why a trip to the vet would be wise. Take him in a covered box to lessen the stress.

Thanks PinkEmily, I've given him extra shredded toilet paper and he will be at the vets first thing. I hope he makes it. I feel so guilty

Thanks Souffle. It's amazing that when I put him in the other cage, he went straight on the wheel, even with his war wounds. He's now in his little house.

But I should have seen the signs. I noticed earlier that Theo was half the size of Sky. I thought Sky was just being boisterous, but it looks like he was also keeping Theo from eating

Sounds very positive if hes going on his wheel. Do you think you should give him sugary foods? Sugar helps with shock in humans doesnt it?? Maybe it will with hams too?? A couple of choco drops may help if you have any.

I don't have any in the house, but he has a treat stick and OH chopped him up a little bit of carrot to go with his food. I could make some porridge and put a bit of sugar in?

Oh you mustn't feel guilty Theodore you obviously really care alot about your Hamsters. I had two female chinese years ago and was told by p@h they were social and be fine together. They seemed really bonded for months with no signs of aggression towards each other then one bit all the others back end really badly.
I seperated them and they do seem to heal really quickly and quite happy on their own.
