Default Which Spot-On is good?

Hey,

so I know some spot on brands are bad... So I'm asking here.

Jamie seems to have mites, covered in loads of little scabs. As well as hairloss around his ear (scratching so much) which looks a little infected. So I've started him on Baytril, but need to know what Spot-On is good.

Cheers

Default Re: Which Spot-On is good?

Hi Anthony. Personally, I would go with the Xeno50 mini spot on, which is available on Amazon.co.uk that I know of, but if you ask over on the mouse forum, chances are someone would send you a couple of spare vials because the box you buy usually has 15 vials, but if your only treating one hamster right now, the cost can be pricey, but if you feel having more vials in the house is handy anyway (if you have more animals that may need treating in future) then it`s worth buying the whole box.

Xeno50 mino comes with a dosing chart and is basically:

Weight of animal = amount in drops

It`s effective and easy to use and is Ivermectin. It`s what your vet would use and is better than that Beaphar spot on that Pets At Home sell. In fact, I think the Beaphar spot-on is only suitable for gerbils and syrian hamsters anyway, so the dosage might be dodgy if it`s a dwarf hamster you are treating?

If the hamster is already scabbing and itching it does sound like a mite or a skin allergy. I would only suspect an allergy if something has changed in the diet or the cage environment though. Age/stress and low immunity can acount for a mite flare up.
