Unhappy R.I.P Milo :(

My wee hammy had to be put to sleep today-30th ( Well It's 5.05am here on the 31st now but I have not been to sleep)

Milo was an old hamster-nearly 2yrs old,he was losing his fur a little in patches on his tummy and under pouches about 2/3 months ago,we(my bf and I) thought it was just old age, then we noticed a little red patch on his tummy a few weeks ago....we assumed it was just a little irritated cause he had no fur there.
He was eating, drinking, and playing fine also...even going mental in his ball....then we had a long stretch of work nights, and we assumed cause he was so old he was sleeping alot more so hadn't really seen him alot past week or 2...
Then this morning we seen him hunched over,he couldnt even do his lil meerkat impression when he was peekin up at us it looked like he was in pain, and the red patch was had turned really red, scabby, and yellow/creamish in colour all over his stomach(he has really long fur so we didn't notice it got worse and he looked fine)...we got a vet appointment within half hour...we had to keep him their for 3 hours cause milo bit the vet. The vet said it looks bad and he didn't know what it could be....we got a phonecall few hours later saying lil Milo had a tumor and the patches was his skin coming off and the vet thought it would be best if he was put to sleep
I feel so bad,we should of noticed sooner! It was all so quick.
Had this happened to anyone else?
When we come thur the door in the morning from working nights he was always waiting for us,and got all excited when we came in.
He was mine and my bf's first pet together-our flat is so empty now
RIP Milo april 09-march 11 xxxxxxxxx

You obviously took good care of him otherwise he wouldn't have reach the age he did. Sometimes other commitments and circumstances take over and we can't have our hammies out every day, or even see them if they are not up before we go to bed, go out etc so don't blame yourself for what happened. You did the right thing by him in the end and I'm sure he knew he was loved, he is healthy and happy playing at the Bridge now.

Rest in peace little Milo

Thank you for all the nice replies
Today has been a bit better I cleaned all his stuff today, and packed the toys etc in a lil bag. We couldn't clean the sawdust out cause we wanted the nice wee smell of him just a lil longer.
We are thinking of maybe gettin another long haired hammy in the next few months, but nothin will replace Milo and I don't wanna get another too soon. At least now we know all the measures to take regarding hamsters health etc.

x

I'm sorry to hear about Milo, but as has been said, he wouldn't have reached such a good age if he hadn't been cared for so well. I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but towards the end Jam had a couple of little sores come up which were apparently caused by his tumor too.

Play well at the bridge little one with all our dearly missed friends xx
