Hope you can find something to soothe your little guy's skin. IMO tea tree cream is fine (I've used it on my hamsters, as have other people I know, with no obvious side effects) - almost everything is toxic if eaten, but the low concentration in the cream shouldn't be harmful. The steroid cream you have will help, but it is a slightly odd thing to be prescribed for Cushings...Steroids cause thinning of the skin, as does cushings so I would have thought that it would leave him more prone to sores.

Cushings can be caused by adrenal gland tumours, so it's possible that was what happened to Holly.

My Syrian may have Cushings so also looking for something for her skin. I need something that won't harm her too much if ingested and that will help soothe her scabs and dry skin.

Someone said Olive Oil could help, what do you guys think?

I'm popping in P@H tommorow so if the Tea Tree Cream is safe I'll give it a go.

The tea tree cream is toxic to them if they ingest it, and since they groom themselves they would most likely ingest it, and some may be even curious to eat it. So it's not safe at all to risk it. It can cause severe side affects if ingested orally.

"In animals, the oil can cause depression, weakness, poor coordination and muscle tremors. Toxicity and several deaths have been reported in cats and other animals who ingested the oil."-from livestrong.com

"When applied to the skin in large quantities, tea tree oil may be absorbed into the body, leading to severe side effects. MedlinePlus advises that when large quantities of tea tree oil were applied to the skin of animals, common reactions included difficulty walking, weakness, slow brain functioning, muscle tremor and poor coordination." - Dangers Of Tea Tree Oil | LIVESTRONG.COM

Since that leaves Skin-Eze Cream 50g, just research it before you get it to make sure that it's safe to use. Hopefully that's safe to use!!

I'm very sorry that your hammie has cusing's as well.

I didn't know it was toxic? I mean 2 breeders recommended it on the previous page so I went out and bought it. It seems to be working for Snickers.

Hmmm...not sure what to think.

Though people can be wrong and not know it's bad, or some people may just think "oh, it's not going to hurt them" when it really can. I ended up ordering it from the UK (I live in the US) and sometime after I did, before I got it in the mail, I researched it and that's what I found out. It may be working, but it's not safe to use.

Please don't risk it. I really care, and don't want anything bad to happen to your hamster.

You should try the Skin-Eze Cream 50g by Johnson's (but research it first to make sure it's okay), or go to your vet and see if they have some medication that can help with the itching.
