Default Lighting

My hamster book says that lighting is very important, but it didn't really explain what to do about lighting. Just to be safe, I keep it darker in my room when it's dark outside. But I don't wanna ask my friend to do that while she's taking care of my hamster if it isn't necessary. What am I supposed to do about lighting?

Nothing, we have had huge storms and they do not affect my hamsters at all. There was a thread on this before and the vast majority I believe said theirs were not bothered by lightning or fireworks either.

I don't worry too much about lighting, I keep my curtains open for natural light during the day and sometimes have a lamp on in the evenings when I'm chatting to them or reading in my room. So long as it's not dark or light 100% of the time and they get some kind of natural light cycle then I think it will be okay.

My two are in my living room, so they have light from about 7am till midnight bit the light during those times varies from natural light to lamps throughout the evening. Lights out at midnight. Weekends are slightly different. But they are use to this, and yours will adapt to your friend's, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Oops sorry I thought you said lightning. Well either way neither have ever bothered any of mine. However the ones that stay in their own room where there is no noise, as soon as it starts to get dark they all get up. I have several in my bedroom that won't get up until I go to bed particularly my robos.

If your friend doesn't wish to make her room dark when dark out she could place a large cardboard box over the cage which will cover the cage in darkness but not harm the Hamster nor bother your friends amount of light.
