I don't know what you guys think but I don't consider black to be a rare hamster color?

I think there has been a topic about 'rare' black hamsters a few weeks ago. someone was charging more than thenormal price for them. It might be them but I can't remember.

I think my local P@H gets them in from time to time.

No that was a different advert for people advertising 'rare' black and white bands for £15 that are also on preloved

Mmm considering that one isn't a black one. Probably another person trying to sell hammies that aren't rare. It make me laugh who do they think they are. My P@H get black ones from time to time. My casper was black when I bought him but is now going brown. He's still lovely though.

Umbrous gold hamster yup definatly looks like one they aren't rare at all I have had atleast 3 and one was a long haired one.

I doubt that is actually a photo of one of the babies - shes advertising creams and black and no one could confuse that colour with black (even stupid people) that may be a baby from a different litter.

I have to add my thoughts to this thread...

Black coloured hamsters aren't rare, but truly black hamsters i.e. carry no other colour gene are! And what is more, true black hamsters stay black - I started breeding true blacks a couple of years ago and they stayed black to the end (with the exception of a few grey hairs). So I would say that my true blacks are rare, I don't know of anyone else who keeps lines the way I do. And if anyone does I would love to get some fresh stock from them

Too true!! Several years ago there were quite a few breeders of very good blacks, I have posted before about the need to breed black to black for many generations in order to get blacks that stay black! Sadly it became very difficult to get unrelated black hamsters so even my black lines are no longer as black as they once were. I do still have an old lady of almost 2 who has no sign of browning, although she has now quite a few white hairs around her muzzle.
The popularity of blacks does seem to be returning after a few years of being out of favour so hopefully this will become easier again and blacks can get back to their true beauty.
Some of you will have already noticed me pouncing on any black babies on offer carrying different blood lines than mine!
