*WARNING* Can anything be done about bad pet shops?!
Hey everyone,
I was walking around my local town and needed some ham bedding, and walked into a pet shop I have never noticed or used before. As soon as I walked in I saw an adult hamster in a tiny cage biting away at the roof of his cage. The cage had a sticker saying 'baby hamster £8.50' and it obviously wasn't a baby so it made me wonder how long the poor thing had been there. There were other hamsters in similarly small cages, but even worse were the birds in the pet shop who were far too many to each tiny cage! I looked around the pet shop and saw the hamster cages they were selling and was again horrified: they made most of the p@h cages look like palaces! I could have fit 4 of the 'syrian hamster cages' into my dwarf's mini duna! I went up to the store owner and pointed out that these cages were not suitable for syrians OR dwarfs, and he said "Oh, they're more fore mice, or as 'carrying cages'". Now I have a smaller cage for taking hams to the vets, but they were too small even for a mouse and were certainly not advertised as carry cages. And there were no alternative cages! I was so tempted to buy the hamsters and get them out of there as the birds were screeching manically and obviously distressed, but then I thought that would just lead to the owner getting more hams in and encouraging him to sell them?
I've written a letter to the pet store, despite the owner treating me like an idiot, and i was wondering if anyone else could suggest something that could be done. Would writing to my MP do anything? Surely there should be some law against selling cages like that? Is there one??? Argh it made me so mad! Not just for the hams but for the birds and other rodents in there as well. Pet shop owners should sell appropriate cages for the animals they sell!!!
