Re: Hazel Hamster Food???
Yeah, I always try to find a local source before I shop online myself. Unfortunately living on an island, even a big island, it's not always possible

Muesli type mixes are great because they offer a nice selection and the hamster in question doesn't get bored to death on it.
Harry/Hazel Hamster is a fine choice.

My point is that if the hamster is already getting all it needs from the pellets and eating it all their is no point in changing to a mix. Perhaps the one and only point in changing is to provide variety which in itself is likely to result in selective feeding. As Axeria pointed out, the hamster needs to eat all of a mix in order to get all of the protein, fibre and nutrients.
On the point that Hazel (or Harry Hamster) is a fine choice, my hamsters disagree.

Re: Hazel Hamster Food???
I find that my hamsters get all the nutrition they need from their HH muesli, picky or otherwise. Its more natural to feed them a variety like a muesli than from some bland prepacked, all in one biscuit. Isn't that what we strive to do with our hams, make their stay with us as comfortable and as natural as possible?
On a more relevant note, we shouldn't be arguing our viewpoints like this. Its not really fair to the OP. All she wants is an opinion on Hazel Hamster, not whether its better than an all in one biscuit food.

Re: Hazel Hamster Food???
Thank you all; for your opinion's. I agree with most of you that the HH has a lot of good nutrients in it. And to be honest-it's the only one that meets the requirments for a great diet for hams and gives them a choice.I have spent countless hours standing and reading the back of bags until i am cross eyed and it's the only one with a proper protein count. The selective brand has nothing of benifit in it and Living World is not bad in a pinch but i think i will stick with the HH-and offer pelletts as well. When i gave a little to the baby[Simba] she just gobbled it down and i only gave her a small teaspoon full but no question she loves, loves, it.Which in turn makes me happy to know she's getting all the nutrients she needs and liking it.And i also gave a small spoon mixed in with my other syrian's food and they loved it. So all in all Mom and babies are all quit happy with HH food.Any more opinions and i would love to hear them as i am researching and i keep researching all the time-ie; food for hams. Thanks again=River.

Re: Hazel Hamster Food???
HammieandMerlin; I do agree with you and my worry is the same-Will they stop carrying it?? I can drive to our PetSmart to pick up so i'm lucky in that regard. They had 5-bags yesterday and i bought them all and ask management if they would be stocking it from now on and they said yes. Anyone who ACTUALLY reads the back of bags-should know the difference.BRAINGIRL; RE; Science Selective; if you read the back of the bag you will see the nutrient value as others have said.I looked at it and the value is low and i didn't buy.I would recommend in a pinch Living World not up to nutrient value but not bad[in a pinch] but i would also look at what has to be added to bring it up to health standards. Hope this helps BRAIN GIRL; River

Re: Hazel Hamster Food???
Thanks River, I don't really have a selection when it comes to hamster food. Each store, and there are only 2 or 3, seems to carry only one kind and the stores are far apart. There was one place that I actually saw HH once but it changed hands and had such a low turnover that I wouldn't trust the freshness of the food! At the moment I'm giving Vitakraft Vitasmart and Theo seems to think it's pretty good. At least he eats all of it! But maybe for my next hamster I will order online

Re: Hazel Hamster Food???
Oh yeah, I add veg! He's been getting baby food (beef & veg is his fav) since his pouch abscess was drained along with the occasional whole piece of veg and boiled egg. He's elderly and I'm perhaps not as strict about getting him back onto his proper hamster diet as I might have been if he was younger
