Default Need Syrian Mix with NO tree nuts or peanuts

I am currently feeding the babies and Sheila a combination of Kaytee complete pellets and the Kaytee mix along with fresh veggies/tofu/hard boiled eggs occasionally.

The home that one of the babies is going to go to has a tree nut allergy in it and the neighbor's child has a peanut allergy. The pellet says it contains the items and mix says it may contain trace elements. So neither food is a good option for them.

They are willing to make their own from scratch mix. I do need to know what they should have in it. All the lists I've read so far start with a commercial mix and they can't do that.

I can get the same components and start adding to their meals now to make the transition easier for the baby.

Any help?

To be honest auntiAnnie, nearly all commercial hamster mixes contain peanuts. I was going to suggest they pick the peanuts out, but if the child has a contact allergy, she won`t be able to touch the nuts either. I would be wary of rehoming a hamster to a child who already has an allergy because many hamsters find themselves homeless as a result of this very problem. I got my syrian Boris from my nephew as his son was found to be allergic to him and he was wheezing and coughing when in the same room as the hamster. So if it means compromising the hamsters diet just so the child can have a pet, I would be asking many more questions of the parents before making a decision.

You can mix your own food up, but nutritionally, it may not be as balanced as a commercially prepared food and won`t have the same amounts of protein, fibre, oils/fats or vitamin/mineral content. I will let others answer this question for you though as it could well be that there are home-made mixes you can prepare yourself. I`m in the UK so don`t really know what`s available over there.

Hi there,

I have found one thats not got any nuts in it at all. You can only buy it either from the website or a few selected pet shops in the UK. It is for sale in other countrys as well I don't know where you live. It is expensive though.

Click the link, then click the uk flag at the top right hand corner, then click on the hamster picture & then click products & the syrian hamster food comes up. Scroll down & click ingrediants & its all listed

bunny-nature.com

Thats the new website. Its not finished yet so youn eed to go to this website to buy it

http://www.bunny-nature.co.uk/hamster_feast_mix.html

It's £5.15 for a 650g packet.

The Supreme complete does not have nuts in in. This is a complete pellet and though I feel it does not offer any stimulation to a hamster in terms of shelling seeds etc if you were to use this as you base and add in various safe seeds and grains this should form a good diet. It is made by the same people as Hazel Hamster so you may get it in the USA

Thank you.

I know the family really wants to bring home SnickerDoodle and will take very good care of her if we can find a food that is safe for the child's allergies.

Is Snickerdoodle a syrian hamster? Was`nt sure but just wanted to add that if she is a dwarf variety, her diet should be free from all sugars and molasses as the dawrf varieties are prone to diabetes. I think your girl is a syrian though? Just wanted to say incase her diet was being compromised in any way because the child wanted the hamster.

Mazuri Hamster & Gerbil Diet - Small Pet - Sale Category - PetSmart

That is the food that we found locally that does not have tree nuts in it. If you could please look it over and let me know if it has everything we need for the hamster's health?

If it is good, I will be picking up some to start the transfer of food so that there is minimum time with the other food in their house.

It seems to be a reasonable diet and I know quite a lot of people do use this in the USA and the hamsters do well on it. They can continue to feed the things you have also ben feeding like egg, tofu, veg & fruit etc in small amounts too and you can add to the basic pellet some sunflower seeds, bulgar wheat, lentils, millet, kitten biscuits etc if you like to provide some variation. The basic diet does need to be primarily the pellets though.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but my daughter's school has the same problem.

They have decided to keep hamsters as a class pets but have been unable to source a nut free food so if anyone can tell me of a source of ready made nut free foods in the UK that would be great.

Since they must have a no nuts policy, due to allergy problems, my 1st reaction is that hamsters aren't really an appropriate class pet. However, they have got them and are feeding a variety fruit and veg with some seeds added in for good measure. My major concerns are that it may not be a balanced diet.

What's it got to do with me? Well nothing really other than I don't like to think of any animal, large or small, being cared for in a sub standard way, and I need to either set my mind at rest or start banging on the heads door!
