Default A robo wanted.

Hi,

Does anyone know where I could get a robo. I've trawled all the rescue sites within reasonable distance and can't find anything.

They do have them in Pets@home but I'm reluctant to buy any living creature from there as I have heard of so many bad experiences from people who have bought from there.

I didn't think I would ever want to get another little furry as I am now the wrong side of 50 but I have fallen in love with these little guys and neeeeeed one.

In my younger days I have kept mice, gerbils, spiney mice,a syrian hamster, rats, rabbits and a guinea pig but nowadays I only have 2 little dogs who I love to bits.

I live about 5 miles from Middlesboro' so if anyone knows of a breeder round about I would be very grateful.

It wouldn't be a breeder, but have you looked into rescues? They do pop up in there sometimes

I got mine from p@h adoption centre and he's absolutely fine. HD him a couple of months and he's friendly and very healthy so if all fails maybe recheck the adoption centre in p@h ?

Hi Dancer, Yeah I googled all the rescue centres round about but none seem to have robos at the moment so will maybe do what Squishyhammy suggested and look in the 'adoptions' in Pets@home.

Hmm I'll have to be more patient methinks.

Thankyou both for your suggestions.

I have the same frame of mind when it comes to Pets At Home, but their adoption area donations supposedly go to charity and not back into their own profits, so any little creature adopted from that area doesn`t know any better. My current male robo oroginated from there and he was six months old when he eventually ended up living with me having been in a private home, taken back to PAH and then adopted by a lady for her young son. She also purchased another younger robo to live with him and within 24 hours, they had to be seperated because Rocky (my lad) attacked the youngster.

That is when a friend of mine who knew the person contacted me asking if I would take him, so how could I refuse! He is still going strong and is around 20 months old now. He`s a great little lad and loves to do his own thing. So even though pet shop hamsters don`t always get the best reputations, they themselves don`t know where they originated from and I`m always happy to take one on as long as it hasn`t been originally purchased by myself.

Best of luck finding your little robo. x

Aww thankyou. When I was first looking at them at Pets@home a male member of staff came over and advised me that I didn't really want a robo as they were extremely aggressive and would bite and are not nice pets and that you couldn't keep 2 as they would fight and the more of them there were the more they would fight and I would be best off with a Syrian!! Once he wandered off a female member of staff came over, told me that he didn't know what he was talking about as she had kept 6 together quite happily and then she informed me that HE was the manager! God help the poor creatures they sell to poor unsuspecting people when THEY can't even agree.

Just goes to show that some staff shouldn`t be anywhere near animals if that`s the advice they are giving out. Rather than being positive, it`s all negitive with no real knowledge of the species. Robos are fast, don`t particularly like handling but some will sit on your hand if they are tame enough. The aggression thing can sometimes be cage aggression and they see anything as a threat that appears within their cage space! My robo sometimes makes a dash for my hand but I play a game with him of cat and mouse and he`s just a little unsure really. I leave him alone most of the time and spot clean around him while he chooses to run around and get in the way! But it`s the way he likes things. I don`t see it as `aggression`, I see it as him telling me in his own way that I`ve invaded his space! Which is all it is really.

If you take on a pair, all you need to ask yourself is:

1. Do I have the space for a second tank/cage if I need to seperate?
2. Do I have two of everything for a pair to share like wheels and some open ended accessories?
3. At the end of the day, seperation isn`t a bad thing for the robos, it can just be a frustration for the owner!

I kept a pair of males in the past that needed splitting up which I never wanted, so I only keep the one these days to prevent the same thing happening. But that`s not to say a pair will always need seperating, although it does tend to be a common occurance.

Try not to listen to bad advice in shops but it sounds as though you know more than they do anyway!
