That is such a shame but that is the reason I never buy pairs. hamsters are happier living on their own and you will see that the one you kept will be so happy and less stressed.
You did not fail at all, if it happened later on (around 5 months old when they reach maturity.) it would have been harder for you to say goodbye to one.
