Default Kallax cage

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share my new Ikea Kallax hamster cage with you, all credit goes to my boyfriend because he is the one that's done all the work and I'm very pleased with the results .

My 4 Syrians, Jerri, Panda, Poppet and Ernie have a level each, they only moved in yesterday and are still settling but I love how easy it is to watch them going about their business . Plus my living room looks so much nicer now I have this instead of stacks of bin cages because I also have a massive rattie cage in this room too!

Thanks for looking!

That looks amazing! I like how you have them all set up too with similar layouts and the different colour wheels.

Looks great and very tidy! Question though, how are they ventilated? x

Thanks

Racinghamster, it has a big piece of polycarbonate as the back and each hamster's section has 5 vivarium vents in along the top, the holes were drilled out and the vents were silliconed in. We are also thinking about drilling circular holes in the top of each sliding door at the front to add two vents to the front of each section as well. I've also seen some little temperature gauges and I'm thinking about adding one to each level to keep an eye on the inside temp. Though I leave the curtains closed through the day with the windows open so its cool in the living room. I also leave a side window open that sends a breeze along the wall that the cage backs onto so fresh air circulates behind the cage where the vents are. Does this sound ok?

That does look great, compact but spacious all at once! My only thought though is that there's very little substrate, other than that it's a really nice set up.

Thanks Cypher, we have some strips of polycarbonate that we are going to put up to stop the bedding getting into the runners, we are just waiting for some more runners to arrive to we can slide it in an out. Then we will be able to give a better layer of substrate for the hams to enjoy

It`s good that the tanks have vents and some air holes, but your right about the temperature inside. On very muggy days, it would be a slight worry that these tanks could get warm on the inside without meshed roofs. Could you post an image of the vents?

Looks fab! Ive had a viv for my syrian for almost a year and it has been brill, Squibbles is very happy in it. It has 3 vents same as yours by the sounds of things but then i also cut a hole in the roof of the viv and added a small computer fan but put it facing outwards so it sucks air through the viv circulating it and blows it all out into the room. I have it running permanently and its been great
