I've been thinking about this myself. I have previously opted to connect two shallower boxes in order to maximise the usable space for the hammies and thus avoid any 'dead space'.

I do have a deeper box spare I am planning to convert into a cage for my syrian hamster though.

I am thinking of making her a mini platform for her out of untreated pine wood which will be very simple to make;

4 pieces of equally sized wood fastened together with dowel pieces (don't fancy metal screws or wood glue) to form a square. Then I will cut a piece of wood to size to form a platform on top.

I have a spare metal ladder that I will weave corrugated card through and attach to the platform as well to make it easier for her to get on top.

As to not waste the inside of the square I will be cutting one or two syrian sized holes so she can use it as a nesting/bed area.

T-bone - that's a brilliant idea. I'm sure I have some creative friends who'd love to help make something similar for my two!

Here's my bin cage for my hamster Molly.

It's made out of large and small plastic tubs from iKea (round about a tenner for the two). The top part of the cage is connected by a hole in the bottom of the small tub and a hole in the lid of the large tub. A plastic ladder from the pet shop joins them up. The top tub is bolted to the lid of the bottom tub. They're ventilated by two two mesh-covered holes on the lids of the two bins as well as through-vents at the bottom opposide corners of the larger tubs (one can be seen behind the wheel in the bottom picture. The water bottle is held on by duct tape at the moment until I can find something more suitable, but duct tape seems to work rather well. Molly can be seen in the top part of the cage with her bum to the camera!

view of inside the large tub;

Molly loves it, though as there are no more bars for her to chew on, I struggle to buy enough lava bites and make enough interesting things for her to chew on. Peanuts and wooden chews with a bit of honey on seem to work well, she's picky!

Just thought I would keep everyone updated on my bin extension for Stewies rotastak, and here it is

I was hoping to make it a bit bigger but we are a bit tight for space on the table that Stewie's cage is on!
