I've been thinking about this myself. I have previously opted to connect two shallower boxes in order to maximise the usable space for the hammies and thus avoid any 'dead space'.
I do have a deeper box spare I am planning to convert into a cage for my syrian hamster though.
I am thinking of making her a mini platform for her out of untreated pine wood which will be very simple to make;
4 pieces of equally sized wood fastened together with dowel pieces (don't fancy metal screws or wood glue) to form a square. Then I will cut a piece of wood to size to form a platform on top.
I have a spare metal ladder that I will weave corrugated card through and attach to the platform as well to make it easier for her to get on top.
As to not waste the inside of the square I will be cutting one or two syrian sized holes so she can use it as a nesting/bed area.
