Default Re: Savic Cambridge ~ Cage Review

I got Goose a cambridge last friday, being a pretty massive hammy i knew immediately the house supplied would be too small for her and the wheel would be to small too, so i bought a savic iglo house and savic 18cm Rolly wheel (would have got a silent spinner or wodent wheel but pets at home didnt have any sized large enough for her) to replace the default ones. The iglo is great and Goose sleeps in it all the time. She also loves the wheel The default items however are of good quality so i passed the house onto my long haired syrian. The wheel is redundant.

Ive left it set up pretty much as default apart from lowering the upper tier a little to fit the iglo up top. Next clean out im going to lower it a little more and put a sputnik hammock in up top and move the iglo to be suspended under the upper tier with a series of leap 'n' ledge's for access.

Only gripe i have is that the water bottle supplied with the cage was a leaker so i replaced it the following day with a classic colourtone hamster bottle (in my opinion you cant beat these bottles for small animals, all my rabbits and guinea pigs have always used them and they never ever leaked)

A pic of it the day i brought it home:

Its now got a sputnik standing on the bottom tray instead of that old busted house i popped in for her to knock about (Goose chewed the pegs that hold the roof on to bits so the roof dropped off) and a colourtone hamster bottle instead of the savik one.

Im also going to replace the food bowl with a bolt on avery bowl as Goose always knocks the bowl all over making an epic mess.

Im very pleased with the cage, however now my parents informed me they would have payed for it for christmas so i could have gotten a hamster heaven cage if they subsidised me the price of the cambridge. Im tempted to get my parents to chip in for a hamster heaven cage anyway because my long haired syrian will need to upgrade from his small starter cage within a few months (after christmas holiday period), so i could always give him the hamster heaven or give him the cambridge and transfer goose to the HH. Only concern is Goose is massive and may not like the sharp bends in the tubes in that cage. i dont want 2 cambridges because i have a thing about owning two of the same item, i just dont like it, at the same time though ill feel bad on the hammy that gets the smaller cage cause ill feel like im giving one of them preferential treatment, lol

Lots of great reviews and pics so I thought' I'd add my 2p's worth. Misty is currently living in a SC too, although little William lived in it for 3 weeks before Misty moved in (he only moved out because Misty didn't like her new cage). So I can't really fault this cage much. It's a fab size, and although it isn't, it actually feels bigger than the Gabber Rex as you can put toys on the ground floor and on the levels.

I replaced the wheel immediately, the other was way to small and squeaky as hell. I also found the bottle was bad for leaking, so I replaced it with a classic water bottle. I also found the shelves were fiddly to move around, and I'm sure its only a matter of time before I break the little clips on the shelves. Because of this, I found it had to clean them. It's not a problem now, because Misty doesn't make any mess on the shelves, however when William was a baby he used to pee and poop wherever he felt like it, including on the shelves, which was a pain.

Also, one of the clips on the small ladder broke off, but that might just have been me being heavy handed! The doors seem tough though, no escapees yet, and Misty seems to love it!

A great review, this is just one of the many cages I could get my little lad Chomp when he's a big boy..
I'm unsure still as to if I want a Cambrige or a tank style cage..
Bah, I need the money first!

I like the way you have set up your cambridge, and your hammy is well cute

If you want to stop the wheel making noise (i dont know if you have heard of this before, so sorry if you have already :P ) take the axle out, then dip in some veg oil, rub the excess off and re-insert it, works a treat for stopping the squeeking on those wheels.

I find that the shelves are much easier to move around when you remove the cage section from the base, but i dont remove the shelves for cleaning, i just remove all accessories from the shelves and tip the entire cage section up on end above the base and all the crap falls into the base ready for emptying, then i give them a quick wipe with a cloth, take 2 mins

I smeared mine in Vaseline Does the same job! I'm still waiting on my wodent wheels!

I love these reviews - so handy! So many cute hamsters too! Love the way the cages are set up as well. Giving me lots of ideas!

I can't find this on the P@H website anywhere though. Do they still sell them? I couldn't find them anywhere else either, though I will make a trip to Notcutts and another garden centre at some point to scope out cages. This one looks like it could be on my list of maybes

Sadly P@H have stopped selling the only decent cages they used to sell, the Savic cages (Peggy, Heaven & Cambridge) They do come up on e-bay quite a lot and also on line pet shops usually have them

The one I go to had a Peggy Metro last time I was in there. Site still has the Peggy's too. Do you know how long they stopped selling them though? I'm wondering if they'd have any "out back".

I've had an offer from a pet shop to try and order me one in, but I wanted to look at it first. Going to try some smaller pet shops, another P@H and garden centres this weekend. Will let you know if I find any!

Could you recommend any good online pet shops? I can't seem to find any amidst my searching!

Thanks for the ebay tip!

ETA: Never mind, anyone looking for one could try Notcutts Garden Centre (I think there's a couple dotted about, I went to the Cranleigh one in Surrey). I'd got my other Savic there and thought there might be a chance they had some, and they did. £55. I had 10% discount so it eased the pain a bit. Haven't set it up yet but it looks great and so much bigger and roomier than his other one even though in reality it's not that much bigger.
