Dewey's Genes
I do hope this is the right place to post this...
The woman who sold me Dewey told me that she bought her daughter a black syrian hamster at Pet Supermarket, and it ended up having babies when this woman didn't know she was pregnant.
If the entire litter were entirely black [except for chest and paws], then can I assume that the father was all black too?

Re: Dewey's Genes
The black gene (a) is a recessive gene so a black hamster needs to have 2 copies to be black.
It seems likely that if his mother was black (aa) and all the litter was black then the father would also have been black however it is also possible for another colour that is carrying black to produce an all black litter. The mother would always give a black gene but a black carrier would give that black to half his sperm so it could be that all the litter happened to receive a black gene from the dad. It is lees likely but it can happen.
Black hamsters nearly always have white socks and a little white bib!
