Default Perfecto tank suitability for having a litter?

After fixing Amelie's gabber rex up to prevent her from bar chewing I can no longer open the little door in the top to put food in (I normally just take the top off anyway). This is fine usually - however I don't want to do this and disturb her when she has babies about. So, I was thinking about buying a perfecto tank especially for when I have babies. What do you guys think?

There is one on ebay right now (the big one with 3 shelves) for £15 with a carry case and extras and it is only 20 minutes away from me - so I'd be eager to know what you guys think ASAP!

Thanks

I would take the shelf out of the gabber and she won't be able to reach the roof very easily. The Perfecto tanks are quite heavy to lift and clean out. (That is a good price for one though)
I am never leaving a shelf in the gabber again as one of my babies is lucky it didn't break a leg today (or worse) it managed to hang itself from a slat.

I doubt she will bar chew with a litter Mollz. She will be too busy and you will be able to remove the log runs or you could take the shelf out so she cannot stand on it to chew though when we did this Bailey had a total furry fit and we had to put it back! We don't have the clips on our gabbers so we can lift the lids of easily and have never had a problem with anyone moving them..too heavy I think.
The perfecto looks nice however I would hesitate with this as a breeding cage as a large litter of syrians needs frequent cleaning and this size of glass cage would be very heavy for you to do often. Amelie might be a bit upset by a cage move so if you were going to do it I would do it soon. It is a good price and near you so go for it if you think you could manage the cleaning though.

Ok, that sorts it then - I'll stick with the gabber and just take the log rolls off.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the shelf Gill, has anyone else had problems like this?

I'm planning on moving her from the living room to the bedroom after the last clean out. Do you think this will stress her out more than leaving her down in the living room will? I just think it is a good idea as it will be away from the TV etc. and the cats can be shut out (although they normally pay no attention to the hams).

The thing that would worry me about using a perfecto for syrians Mollz, would be the possibility that Mum would decide to use one of the shelves to make her nest which could leave the pups open to falling.

I dont know how likely that would be, but it would make me a little nervous.

The other thing is the feeding, it could be quite difficult to reach the bottom to place food in, we usually use the top shelf to put Grey-ham's food on, but of course you wouldn't be able to do that with pups. Not to mention any quick cleaning of the wet corner after two weeks.

I think personally I would just stick with a shelf-less Gabber, or make a tub/bin cage. I really like using our tub cages for visibility, access without disturbing Mum & Pups, and the fact that you can drill a hole in the plastic very easily to ensure you have a low bottle for the pups!

I wouldn't think the tv, etc would bother her if she's used to it but the cats might spook her when she first has the babies.

This is probably stupid but I'd also worry about one of my mums feeling too exposed in a glass tank, Mollz - I know Caramel seemed happy to hide under the shelf and she obviously felt secure there.

I'm wondering what to do about Molly and Smartie's shelves now - the plan was to leave them in like last time. I also planned to leave the log bridges on as it makes it very dark and cosy under there....hmmmm.

Hope you little one is ok, Gill

He/she is ok but it was a good job it happened when I was here. Next time I may put a guinea pig igloo in I think.
Posh won't go in a gabber so she can put her litter under the shelf of a deep bottomed wire cage.
