Re: Bar Chewing
Thank you BP. Actually, Quigley has temporarily been evicted from my room until we can sort the bar chewing I’ll have a look at the thread and see what cardboard I have lying around which I could use.

Re: Bar Chewing
I've just noticed that he's been evicted when I read Quigleys thread lol, poor boy He probably knows you're in the room at night time too and just wants you to come and play with his so he's trying to get your attention. I'm sure he'll settle though and hopefully he'll be able to move back in Hopefully the pegs will give him something constructive to chew on.

Re: Bar Chewing
Oh gosh I hadn't thought of that. Might be true, actually. He seems to have learnt that my hands generally = playpen. But, I can't be getting up at 2am for playtime! Nor can he be staying out all night... Maybe he won't chew when I'm not in the room. Wish my night vision camera hadn't broken (after only a week!) so I could check from afar.

Re: Bar Chewing
I buy a lot of wooden pegs
I've found that if one of my hammies does make the wooden bits to come loose from the metal bit (mostly my females) then the metal bit stays hooked on the cage bar. The main issue is me trying to remove it! One of my girls seemed to love taking pegs apart. She rarely chewed them, just somehow took the entire wooden bits off and dumped them in her bedding so she could throw the metal thing up and down the cage bars all night. Suffice it to say someone was banned from having pegs!

Oh no I hope I didn't worry you too much! It may be different in the UK and other countries, but I do know that in the US we have tin (which accounts for the shiny bits) on our tissue boxes so I usually avoid them or buy the kind that are all cardboard. You may want to double check elsewhere before panicking

Re: Bar Chewing
Wooden pegs sound like a good idea, and we happen to have lots of them!
Yes, BP, it is really annoying. From the reviews on Amazon, sounds like the same happened to a lot of other people. I'm returning it for a refund and hopefully I can get another which works.

Re: Bar Chewing
A little update about my own, similar situation: I've had the air con active, on and off, for about 6-7 hours now, and my room is at a much more comfortable 24*C. My Fluff has been alternating between digging and running in his wheel for the past hour or so, and hasn't done so much as look at his bars. =)
So, in conclusion, and in my case, stupid heat = grumpy hammy that wants to sit and chew bars.
Well, hopefully.

Don't worry Drago, I'm easily worried Ham-dad started looking up the recycling codes on the bottom of the boxes, they have 21 PAP (this is an EU code) on the bottom which is non-corrugated fibreboard, so paper recycling. Anything with metal has a different code. I'm not telling anyone they are safe though. I think it's perhaps a bit like the fabric hammocks, supervise your ham first with it in a playpen before putting it in their cage or just use a different box if you're worried. I've yet to see mine chew anything apart from food stuffs, sticks or toilet roll tubes so maybe I'm lucky with mine

Good to hear it's not tin! My hams don't like the inside of the boxes that have the "tin" so I leave them out anyways. I wish I didn't have a chewer! Duncan is the mouthiest ham I've ever had, oh well, at least he keeps his teeth down?
