Teeth Chattering
My ham's surely annoyed about something today. I've heard him chattering his teeth quite a bit in his nest.
Strange though as he just got up, had a good stretch, wash etc.....

Re: Teeth Chattering
Hi MikeW, there's just been a really similar thread about hamsters chattering recently: Chatty little guy!
It could be a content, sleepy chattering Maybe keep an eye on him just in case though

Re: Teeth Chattering
Thanks. It does indeed sound a similar thing to the post you linked to Leila0420.
It sounds like it's hard to work out whether hams do this because they're content or cross about something?
I've mainly heard my ham munching in his nest today but he's chattering a bit at the moment.
It was clean house day today so I freshened up his house and toys.
If he's annoyed I can only think of 2 possibilities. 1 being I introduced a natural wood bench to him late last week so I didn't put that back after cleaning today incase that was irritating him in some way and 2 with the hot weather lately I wonder whether he might have been getting some kind of draft from my having the windows open. Is it possible he may have got a cold or something from that? Maybe I'll have to be more careful with that. He looks healthy enough though and was swinging from his bars and running in his Wodent last night along with usual stretching, grooming, eating, drinking etc. and had a good run about in his exercise ball. It's strange. I hope whatever it is if he is annoyed about something passes.

It can be either. With experience it gets easier to judge why a hamster is making noises but you're right that it can be tough to tell at first. If in doubt, just be careful around your ham while he's making the noises. Eventually you should work out roughly why he makes them

Re: Teeth Chattering
My ham chatters at all sorts of things, she makes a sort of chirpy chatter when she is happy and saying hello, she does a muttery chatter when she is pottering about fussing over her home or in the middle of chewing something , she chatters from frustration when she can't come out or when something doesn't go her way and she chatters when she is stressed and upset like if something has been moved or changed . Oh and when she is excited and about to hurl herself up a favourite climb!
