Sounds like a plan have you tried getting him in a hamster ball or anything like that? Sometimes that's easier than rising them up on your palm to prevent falling. That way you can then put him down in your lap and give him time to venture out.

Treats are definitely the way to go. As you say start from basics let hammy get on your hand to eat Treat and when concentrating eating gentle lift you hand up and then if hammy looks uncomfortable gentle lower back inside cage. Keep repeating this every day a few times until he trusts you enough to let you put him on your lap. It takes time but better to go slow and have a super tame furry friend at the end of it. My hamsters the complete opposite she begs to come out for a play then tries to escape lol. Walking over hands doesn't work with Tiffy she's like a bullet from a gun. Be patient good luck x

Sorry meant to say do this inside cage at first and don't lift him too high or he will get scared. When he's relaxed enough then lift him onto your lap but again not too high in case he jumps. Ball is very good idea. My old hamster Toffee always comes in and out in his ball only now let's me pick him up from the cage and I've has him over 3 years.

I agree with many other members who say treats are the way to a hammies heart. Once Gizmo was happy taking treats from me, I started to only feed them to him by the cage door as I wanted to encourage him to be in this area as it would be easier to encourage him out. At first I had to lead him there with the treat and once he got to the door I would give it to him but it didn't take long for him to realise that wad the treats area. Once he was there I was able to see if he would let me scoop him up, which eventually he would, well, once I had allowed him to eat his treat. You could try training him like this to avoid having to put your hand in his cage, you could them offer the ball, cup or your hand once they are there.

I had a try this morning whilst he was eating a little piece of banana. I raised him only about 10cm and he happily sat and ate there, looked at me 'as a, thanks that was yummy' and hopped back off and into his nest. I think that we are both happy to continue this until I can remove him fully.

I have used the ball idea, but I do think it would be better for him to climb onto my hand. Otherwise he tries to run in it rather than coming out haha. I would like to associate the ball with running, and my hand with treats and interaction

Glad its going well for you he sounds like a super sweet little guy, he will be tame as anything in no time. Wish my Tiffy would sit on my hand for more than 2 seconds but shes very hyper active so have to make do with her crawling all over me and scratching and stroking on the move lol X

Yes he is a lovely little thing! He's the first hamster I have since I was a young child, so I am keen to work with him so I can enjoy him the most I can Plus he just gets fluffier by the day haha. Here's a little picture of him taken about 2 weeks ago

Quick update

After the reassurance from everyone, I was much more confident with Obi. He seems to be happy with walking onto my hand and being stroked. He also likes to climb up my arm where I move him to my bed to explore a little. It's working well. Thanks everyone for your time
