Treats are definitely the way to go. As you say start from basics let hammy get on your hand to eat Treat and when concentrating eating gentle lift you hand up and then if hammy looks uncomfortable gentle lower back inside cage. Keep repeating this every day a few times until he trusts you enough to let you put him on your lap. It takes time but better to go slow and have a super tame furry friend at the end of it. My hamsters the complete opposite she begs to come out for a play then tries to escape lol. Walking over hands doesn't work with Tiffy she's like a bullet from a gun. Be patient good luck x
