Java, bouncing her way to HC!
I finally tugged my SO's arm enough to let me add another hamster to our little family.
Please meet Java!
She's a short haired Syrian golden (??? if anyone can confirm this, I'd love that, I suck at genetics) banded. We rescued her from a very tiny cage that was not being taken care of.
She is VERY hand shy, and wasn't interested in taking treats from either my SO or my hand. She LOVED her sand, and was happy to sit in her bowl and chew on her oxbow (I haven't added any HT yet). I've added some toilet paper I had in my shirt so she would get used to my scent.
I'll spend the next few days working with her and hopefully she'll be more comfortable around me soon. I've never had a hamster QUITE this hand shy... so it'll be tricky! My boys were crawling all over me by about day two, and my previous Syrians were very calm and happy to snuggle me. She's a bit jumpy and nervous. Hopefully she calms down and de-stresses. More pictures to come!

My last little fluff took months before she was tame but by the end of it she was so chilled and wonderful that it was more than worth it. I think she was just testing me (and I didn't blame her! Ha!) x

Thank you!!!
I hope she warms up soon... I don't feel confident handling her right now because she's very jumpy. I'll probably do a lot of treat coaxing.

Re: Java, bouncing her way to HC!
Thank you! I really hope she starts to warm up soon. She's got the night to herself with (admittedly) my prying hands, lol. I figure she'll get the chance to settle in and we'll be back tomorrow and try some taming. My SO offered her a carrot and a meal worm, but she'd only take them after he set them down.
I'm going to keep putting my own scented toilet paper for her nesting in there, and spend time talking to her and work towards getting her used to taking treats from my hand.
I supposed I needed a challenge, my boys basically came pre-trained!

Re: Java, bouncing her way to HC!
Welcome to your new addition !!! =D
Congratulation ! She looks soo much like Lily !! =O No worry, you'll make it ! Hamsters that have been mistreated tend to be thankful to the "savier" !!
So be ready to be spoiled !! (And to spoil too !!!!!)
Annie xx

Re: Java, bouncing her way to HC!
Java is gorgeous I am sure that with time and patience she will become more relaxed around you, I know that my Mischief took a very along time to hand tame- but it was completely worth it.
