Run Free Newtie
Our dear boy, Newtus Hamsterus, aka Newtie, went to the rainbow bridge today. He passed very peacefully at the vets. I had to take him there to help him on his way as he was clearly in pain and suffering. He actually left us a few days earlier I think, when he came to the cage door to come out, and wasn't out very long and clearly not very well in himself. I see that as his goodbye. After that he was in his nest mostly but still coming out for his food. However I could see he was in pain and made the only decision possible. He was also very bloated and any delay could have caused him a traumatic death if anything had burst.
He was the grand age of almost two and a half years and still had the most beautiful fur - no fur loss at all. He started to decline quite quickly recently.
Play well darling boy - my little hoover who would eat anything and loved his food like no other hamster we have had.
He was an amazing character and very independent and funny. He had his arm tunnel trick and his "I'll sneak in the kitchen when she looks away" trick. Very mischievous and cheeky and he brought great joy to our family and was very much part of the family.
Here he is in his prime

I'm so very sorry for your loss. We couldn't have asked for a more loving home for him and are grateful that you made him so much part of your family.
Play well at the bridge Newtie - many friends and family are waiting there to greet you x

Re: Run Free Newtie
Serendipity, I too am so very sorry for the loss of your special boy. From the time he came home with you as a baby until now, his life has been a joy to follow. A handsome fellow, though to be expected from Custard parents, who also had a huge personality. Your tales of his doings and the photos on his thread never failed to make me smile and even laugh at his antics. Especially his determination to outwit you and make it into the kitchen.
You gave him the most loving and caring home and he lived a long life as part of your family.
Play well at the bridge Newtie. Friends and family are there to be with. Send a sign back home that all is well.
Hugs to you Serendipity at this difficult time. X

Re: Run Free Newtie
I am so so sorry to hear about Newtie's final escape, to the Rainbow bridge. Let's hope it has a kitchen.
Newt was a main character on this forum and it won't be the same without him. He will be missed.

Re: Run Free Newtie
Thank you all. I am missing him of course, especially at feeding time, although he had been fading for a while. I also hope there is a kitchen there, and plenty of crumbs.

Re: Run Free Newtie
Hi Serendipity. I haven’t been on the forum for a while as I’ve been quite busy at uni but I popped in to ask a question about Quigley recently and when I saw your thread I had to comment. I’m so sorry to hear about Newt. I remember when you got him! He was such a lovely little guy and he had a good long life. It’s so hard making the decision to euthanise a beloved pet but sometimes it is what’s best. Hope you’re doing ok.
