When we had to have Forrest PTS, our vet popped him into a small box and gave him a whiff of gas to send him to sleep before the little injection to send him on his way, it was very very thoughtful and we where not charged any extra it was just their normal procedure for small furries.
it is a horrid decision to make, but when their quality of life is so suspect it is a kindness.
Our thoughts to you and little Bilbo

Thank you, that brings me much comfort. Hopefully they will be able to do the same for him. I made him an appointment for 4pm tommorow after I get out of school

My vet also gives them a little gas first so they are asleep when he injects them. I am sorry you have to go through this but it is one of the most loving acts we can do for our small furry friends

Everyone else has already said what I was going to say/suggest
And four is a marvellous! I've only had (well he was mums) one live till a little over 4. Usually between 2.5 and 3.5 so he's done marvellous and you've done an amazing job looking after him and even now thinking about his own comfort going through the process of being euthanised. All best with it. It's never easy to say farewell but what a life he has led! Much love xx

I'm so sorry you have to make such a difficult decision. 4 is a marvellous age though so Bilbo won't be going before his time. He's obviously has had a good life with you but it does sound likes he's struggling. You've had your little friend a very long time so you know better than anyone if he's not himself. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for our pets, when the time comes, is let them go.

I've not yet had to have a hamster PTS, although as my eldest ham is 2&1/2 I do think about it often but I did have a rabbit several years ago who was poorly and it was the kindest thing to do. The vet didn't have any gas for him, just an injection but it was very quick, very peaceful, he clearly wasn't distressed by the process and just quietly went to his forever sleep.

I'm really sorry you have to make this choice for Bilbo but he is a great age & has had such a good life, if it's his time & he needs help going to the bridge then that is something we do for them out of love.

I've sadly had to have two hamsters put to sleep, some vets will want to take them into another room for the injection then bring them back to you but the choice should be yours.
I held mine while the vet injected them & just spoke to them gently, it was very quick with no signs of pain or distress, they just slip away into their forever sleep.

Such a hard decision, one you've thought about deeply. The injection is quick and I found with Twinkle that she looked so peaceful & pain free afterwards.

I'm so sorry They usually give them gas to make them asleep first. I had a hamster put to sleep last year and I was devastated but it was the best thing for her. It's such a hard decision to make and you're being so brave about it! I've seen lots of these as I am a vet student and its very peaceful and they are fast asleep when the needle goes in so there is no pain. Big hugs to you <3
