Default Do hamsters recognize deeds or actions?

It's probably a stupid question to ask, i certainly don't doubt the intelligence of any creature, but i just feel wierd to the fact that from the get go, Lemon tart has not feared me. He screamed a bit when i removed him from the ball but after that he did not hesitate to approach me, for treats or for interaction. Do you think he recognized what i had done and knew from the start that i was not a threat?

I currently have his bin next to my chair so that i can keep close watch on him at all times in case of any developements so far so good. he even sleeps and will sometimes gesture at me ina way saying "lemme out i wanna play" and he'll board my hand he's done it without a treat but i like giving him treats.and this morning i saw he had used the tissues i have given him to sleep for the morning.

Lemon tart so far is doing fine and i hope that he wil be for the remainder of his stay here s my permanent ham baby. pics will come soon

I'm no expert, but I think they would. I think Lemon Tart probably just trusts you more now than before. Sounds like taming is going well!

Yay! I'm always happy when I get a fluff that is almost tame from the get go! I feels so good to be able to easily handle them on the 2nd week! How long have you had Lemon Tart?

I totally get it! It was a shock to me when Tori clambered up my arm on day 3 ready to be stroked and get some loving!

Yes I think they can recognise deeds or actions - from a trusted person with a familiar smell. They learn to trust through the experience of how you handle them and how you treat them. And make their feelings known if you do something to annoy them or overstep the mark! Most hams get stressed about cage cleans, so it's important to keep that trust and build on it by being careful not to disturb their set up too much during cage cleans. Using a potty litter tray helps as the rest of the cage tends to stay clean then and you just empty and clean out the potty tray and refill it once a week. Glad he is so lovely and tame. Watch out though, sometimes they still 'ping' when not fully tame or used to you (ie leap out of your hands and fall).

I do think that animals can "read" other animals, including people. Years ago I had 2 cats. We adopted a dog from the shelter that despite being extremely well trained, could not be trusted. She would bite without warning. We took her to our longtime professional trainer and she refused to have her in the class because she's met other dogs from this same litter and said they were all like that. Our cats had run away the day we brought that dog home but came back after we took her back to the shelter. Then we adopted a German Shepherd. He was easily twice the previous dog's size but our cats not only came home, they would sleep with him! So it wasn't just a general fear of dogs. They knew which one meant harm and which one didn't, even though the first never made a move on them.
